{"id":27132,"date":"2025-08-27T19:19:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T19:19:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/27132\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T19:19:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T19:19:12","slug":"danish-foreign-minister-summons-us-diplomat-over-greenland-broadcaster-reports-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/27132\/","title":{"rendered":"Danish foreign minister summons US diplomat over Greenland, broadcaster reports \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph  \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/denmark\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/denmark\/\">Denmark<\/a> has summoned the top US diplomat in the country over reports that US citizens with alleged links to president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> have been conducting covert influence operations in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/greenland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/greenland\/\">Greenland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Denmark\u2019s foreign minister, said on Wednesday that there were \u201cforeign actors\u201d attempting to influence the future of Greenland and that all such efforts were \u201cunacceptable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">He has summoned Mark Stroh, the charge d\u2019affaires at the US embassy in Copenhagen and its most senior diplomat in Denmark at present, for a meeting at the foreign ministry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Denmark has been shaken by Mr Trump\u2019s repeated suggestions that the US wants to take control of the vast Arctic island \u2013 a semi-autonomous part of the kingdom of Denmark \u2013 from Copenhagen, and his refusal to rule out using force to do so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The Scandinavian country had already summoned the top US diplomat in May, following a report in the Wall Street Journal that a classified message was sent to US intelligence agencies urging them to identify people in Greenland and Denmark who support Mr Trump\u2019s ambition to take over the island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The latest report by DR, the Danish public broadcaster, said Danish authorities were aware of at least three US citizens with alleged links to the Trump administration gathering information in Greenland and conducting influence operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Mr Rasmussen said in television interviews that he was \u201cnot surprised\u201d by the report. But he added: \u201cIt\u2019s important that we gain some insight into this so that our people \u2013 in both Greenland and Denmark \u2013 know what it is that we risk being up against.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Denmark\u2019s security and intelligence service (PET) said on Wednesday that its assessment was that \u201cGreenland, especially in the current situation, is the target of influence campaigns of various kinds. PET expects that such campaigns have the purpose of creating a split in the relationship between Denmark and Greenland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Some senior Danish officials sought to downplay the significance of summoning Stroh, saying that the three US citizens appeared to act in an amateur way and there was no link established to US intelligence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">But Danish politicians reacted with dismay. \u201cThis means the whole misery over Greenland is not over,\u201d former foreign minister Martin Lidegaard told the TV channel TV2.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">He added: \u201cThis is putting a heavy strain on our relationship with the US \u2013 and Americans should know that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Aaja Chemnitz, a Greenlandic member of Denmark\u2019s parliament, said: \u201cIt is beyond a joke that they try to infiltrate Greenland\u2019s society in this way. It is Greenland itself who must decide what we want and what future we want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The allegations come just days after the Trump administration caused pain to Danish business by issuing a stop-work order on an almost complete offshore wind farm co-owned by Orsted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">That came on the same day that Mr Rasmussen and Denmark\u2019s ambassador to the US signed a partnership with California\u2019s  governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/08\/24\/gavin-newsom-trolls-towards-the-us-presidency\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/08\/24\/gavin-newsom-trolls-towards-the-us-presidency\/\">Gavin Newsom, the self-styled leader of the resistance to Trump<\/a>. Danish officials deny there is a connection between the two events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The US embassy did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The US is currently without an ambassador in Copenhagen despite Mr Trump naming Ken Howery, who is close to Elon Musk, in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">In a separate move, Denmark\u2019s prime minister Mette Frederiksen on Wednesday apologised to the thousands of Greenlandic women who over decades were forcibly fitted with contraceptive coils.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">She acknowledged that the case had caused \u201canger and sorrow\u201d in Greenland as well as hurting perceptions of Denmark. \u201cWe cannot change what has happened. But we can take responsibility.
