has described the recent loss of life in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/venezuela\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/venezuela\/\">Venezuela<\/a> as \u201cappalling\u201d and said international law must be upheld. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Connolly did not make explicit reference to the actions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">United States<\/a> in removing Venezuelan president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nicolas-maduro\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nicolas-maduro\/\">Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a> from power or the attacks on Venezuelan ships that preceded the intervention. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, she spoke in the context of what she called the \u201ctremendous challenges\u201d facing the world. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-nations\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-nations\/\">United Nations<\/a> general secretary has said, there must be full respect for international law including the United Nations charter,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnd the recent loss of lives in Venezuela \u2013 it\u2019s appalling and it\u2019s often overlooked in the debate.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Connolly was speaking at the opening of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/stripe\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/stripe\/\">Stripe<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/young-scientist-and-technology-exhibition\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/young-scientist-and-technology-exhibition\/\">Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition<\/a> where she said the young people taking part gave her hope for the future despite the world\u2019s many problems. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She described the exhibition\u2019s 550 projects as the \u201cwonderful end\u201d to the rigorous application of scientific methods to a wide range of issues, and the creativity and dedication that required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a important that the event served as an opportunity \u201cto put science and technology themselves under the microscope\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said there should be discussion about \u201cwhat questions are being asked, what data is being collected, the nature of the analysis carried out and the conclusions that are being drawn and will be drawn \u2013 for what purpose and for whose benefit\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere needs to be an open and honest debate on these issues so that science and technology can be a part and essential part of the transformative change required to meet the interconnected challenges of our time \u2013 irreversible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/climate-change\/\">climate change<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/biodiversity\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/biodiversity\/\">biodiversity<\/a> loss, the normalisation of war, forced displacement, global hunger and poverty. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cTransformative change cannot be achieved, much and all as we like to believe it can, with science and technology alone.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Climate change was a case in point, she said. It was less a scientific problem than a problem of injustice in societies and economies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said the same problem was resulting in \u201cthe concentration of wealth and power among more and more unaccountable interests and that are increasingly posing a serious challenge to our democratic processes throughout the world\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI absolutely believe that science and technology have the greatest potential to serve the common good, but it is important to remember that they are not neutral in their purpose or application. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat is why the decisions you make as young people regarding the areas that you pursue for further study, investigation and exploration are critically important.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Connolly said she was looking forward to meeting the students and seeing their projects. However, she was suffering from a bug that she joked could not be cured by anything more scientific than bed rest, and had to cancel her intended walkabout. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">No scientific solution came to the rescue of the other guest speaker of the day either. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/patrick-collison\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/patrick-collison\/\">Patrick Collison<\/a>, co-founder of sponsors Stripe, and the 2005 overall winner of the competition, was due to be on stage but his flight was delayed by bad weather across mainland Europe. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking by video link, he promised to hold a questions-and-answers session with the students when he arrived at the venue. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the meantime, he had words of encouragement for those hoping to follow in his footsteps and those of his brother and Stripe co-founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/john-collison\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/john-collison\/\">John Collison<\/a>, who won a category award at the competition the same year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said school was great but students needed to look outside the curriculum to find their own passions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFollow your curiosity,\u201d he said. \u201cTeenagers can do great things.
