{"id":272883,"date":"2026-01-07T21:14:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T21:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/272883\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T21:14:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T21:14:07","slug":"white-house-completes-plan-to-curb-bedrock-environmental-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/272883\/","title":{"rendered":"White House completes plan to curb bedrock environmental law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The Trump administration has finalized a plan to roll back regulations implementing a landmark environmental law that the White House says needlessly delays federal approvals for energy and infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n<p>The action Wednesday by the White House Council on Environmental Quality rescinds regulations related to the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/national-environmental-policy-act-ai-data-centers-a1efa3f9a8b2022ded585fd8f1524cce\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Environmental Policy Act,<\/a> which requires federal agencies to consider a project\u2019s possible environmental impacts before it is approved. <\/p>\n<p>Katherine Scarlett, who leads the council, said in a statement that the directive will \u201cslash needless layering of bureaucratic burden and restore common sense to the environmental review and permitting process.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Under Trump, she added, \u201cNEPA\u2019s regulatory reign of terror has ended.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The action comes as Congress considers legislation intended to speed up permitting reviews for new energy and infrastructure projects and limit judicial review under that law.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans and many Democrats believe the 56-year-old law has become mired in red tape that routinely results in yearslong delays for major projects. The law requires detailed analysis for such projects and allows for public comments before approvals are issued. <\/p>\n<p>A bill approved by the Republican-controlled House would <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nepa-energy-projects-environmental-review-speed-02fcdd02031a03f85f6d066c42ecc906\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">place statutory limits on environmental reviews<\/a>, broaden the scope of actions that do not require review and set clear deadlines. It also would limit who can bring legal challenges and legal remedies that courts can impose.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats agree the permitting process has become unwieldy, but say the House bill undercuts public input and participation while overly restricting judicial review.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to approve permitting changes were set back last month after the administration <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-offshore-wind-energy-climate-c0ac1e447c93126327f1922327921aa0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suspended five major offshore wind projects<\/a> on the East Coast because of unspecified national security concerns. <\/p>\n<p>Democratic Sens.
