{"id":27311,"date":"2025-08-27T21:06:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T21:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/27311\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T21:06:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T21:06:07","slug":"students-angry-after-top-performers-lose-out-on-places-due-to-cruel-random-selection-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/27311\/","title":{"rendered":"Students angry after top-performers lose out on places due to \u2018cruel\u2019 random selection \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish Second-Level Students\u2019 Union has criticised the use of what it said was the \u201cdeeply unfair\u201d random selection process after some students who achieved maximum points lost out on their first preferences of college courses on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In all, 51 per cent of third-level applicants received their first choice following the initial round of offers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-applications-office\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-applications-office\/\">Central Applications Office<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cao\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cao\">CAO<\/a>), with four-fifths being offered one of their top three preferences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, places on 25 level-eight courses in high demand nationwide were allocated using random selection. Two of these courses required the maximum 625 points for entry, meaning some top-performing applicants missed out while others got in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">These two courses at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/trinity-college-dublin-tcd\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/trinity-college-dublin-tcd\/\">Trinity College Dublin<\/a>, which resorted to using the lottery system for six courses, were dental science and its degree in management science and information systems studies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Despite expectations among some in the sector that lowering grade inflation might reduce the use of random selection, there was no change in the number of courses using it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Preston \u00d3 Caoimh, president of the second-level students\u2019 union , described the process as \u201cdeeply unfair\u201d, saying it had caused \u201congoing concerns\u201d for students in the lead up to exams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cStudents can work tirelessly to achieve the points needed for their course, only to see their hopes dashed by what is essentially a lucky dip. It doesn\u2019t truly reflect the ability, effort or potential of the student just as many feel the Leaving Cert itself doesn\u2019t,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said some students, who faced both lowering grade deflation and random selection, had spoken of feeling \u201cdisadvantaged\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trinity said the downward adjustment in grade inflation this year was \u201coffset by a significant increase in demand\u201d, with cut-off points rising by an average of 9.6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/education\/2025\/08\/22\/cao-helpdesk-2025\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CAO offers helpdesk 2025: Our experts answer your questions liveOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The number of CAO applicants overall jumped 7 per cent to 89,347 this year, up from 83,543 in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trinity vice-provost Orla Sheils, who previously described random selection as a \u201ccruel arbiter\u201d, said while the reduction in the uplift in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/leaving-certificate\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/leaving-certificate\/\">Leaving Certificate<\/a> grades was welcome \u201cit is regrettable that the effects of this gradual unwinding will continue for a number of years to come\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere is really no fair way of solving the problem when students present on equal marks,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While the random selection approach had been a feature since before the Covid-19 pandemic, it had \u201cclearly been exacerbated by the grade inflation of recent years\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/education\/2025\/08\/27\/have-your-say-are-you-disappointed-with-your-cao-offer-due-to-a-points-rise-or-random-selection\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Have your say: Are you disappointed with your CAO offer due to a points rise or random selection?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Prof Peter McHugh, interim president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/university-of-galway\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/university-of-galway\/\">University of Galway<\/a>, which used random selection for four courses including medicine and general nursing, said the continued use of the lottery system was \u201cunfortunate\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf gradual unwinding of grade inflation is going to take years, then further consideration of solutions to avoid lotteries should be considered,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt is worth considering whether there could be H1a-b and H2a-b [grades] and whether this would help create a distinction between candidates on merit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Further and Higher Education <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/james-lawless\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/james-lawless\/\">James Lawless<\/a> said the random selection process was \u201cvery fair\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhat would be unfair would be some kind of human intervention to nudge one student above another.
