{"id":273732,"date":"2026-01-08T07:50:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T07:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/273732\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T07:50:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T07:50:08","slug":"the-european-commission-does-not-want-you-to-read-this-article-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/273732\/","title":{"rendered":"The European Commission does not want you to read this article \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">European commissioner for tech Henna Virkkunen is not too keen on you knowing what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/meta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/meta\/\">Meta<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/google\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/google\/\">Google<\/a> and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/technology\/big-tech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/technology\/big-tech\/\">big US online firms<\/a> have been saying to her. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A year-long fight to press the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\">EU\u2019s<\/a> powerful executive arm to cough up correspondence between Virkkunen and tech giants says a lot about the way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\/\">commission<\/a> president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/a> has tightened up the control of information. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The union\u2019s digital regulations have become a real point of tension in the fraying relationship between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/europe\/\">Europe<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">United States<\/a>. Virkkunen, who oversees the bloc\u2019s digital rules, has had to contend with serious political pushback from tech firms and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Trump<\/a> administration. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">These days any EU decision to fine Big Tech companies for failing to clamp down on the deluge of illegal and harmful content on screens, or for abusing their dominant market positions, is carefully weighed up. Trump has warned penalties on US companies could be met by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/economy\/2025\/09\/05\/how-trump-protects-big-tech-from-big-brussels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/economy\/2025\/09\/05\/how-trump-protects-big-tech-from-big-brussels\/\">hefty tariffs<\/a> on European trade in retaliation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Senior commission officials working under Virkkunen initially resisted releasing correspondence between top executives of Facebook-owner Meta, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/amazon\/\">Amazon<\/a> and Google and the Finnish politician, in response to a standard access-to-information request from The Irish Times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In something of a pyrrhic victory, an appeal saw the commission finally release copies of the letters, a year after the request was first lodged. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nick-clegg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nick-clegg\/\">Nick Clegg<\/a>, then-Meta\u2019s top lobbyist, told the EU commissioner he saw a \u201cgrowing disconnect\u201d between European leaders\u2019 hopes for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a> to boost their economies, and regulators\u2019 slow approach to the technology. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhile other regions are moving forward with AI development, the EU\u2019s regulatory delays have resulted in Europeans accessing AI technology much later than others,\u201d the former UK deputy prime minister wrote in a December 20th, 2024 email to Virkkunen.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"European commissioner Henna Virkkunen. Photograph: Nicolas Tucat\/AFP via Getty Images <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kent Walker, head of global affairs at Google, assured the tech commissioner that the online giant remained \u201cdeeply committed\u201d to Europe. He noted Google had invested more than \u20ac4.5 billion in a  large data centre in Hamina, in her home country of Finland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Google executive said he was eager to chat to Virkkunen about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/digital-services-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/digital-services-act\/\">Digital Services Act<\/a> and the Digital Markets Act, and how the landmark pieces of tech legislation were working. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A letter on behalf of Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy said the tech giant hoped to \u201ccontribute to enhancing the EU\u2019s competitiveness and AI development\u201d. The December 11th, 2024 letter said Amazon was \u201cdeeply committed to Europe\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is unusual the commission would attempt to halt the release of such standard correspondence between industry and a commissioner. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Roberto Viola, the top civil servant in the commissioner\u2019s department, claimed the documents contained information about tech companies\u2019 positions and views. Releasing the lobbying letters could \u201cundermine their commercial interests\u201d, the official wrote in his original May 6th decision. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Journalists who have spent years covering the EU institutions complain the commission is increasingly reluctant to part with information about goings on inside its Berlaymont headquarters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Von der Leyen has centralised a lot of decision-making power within her team of advisers and exercises a greater element of control over the public pronouncements of the other 26 commissioners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2025\/12\/08\/catch-remaining-targets-leaked-files-pull-back-curtain-on-corporate-lobbying\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Catch remaining targets\u2019: Leaked files pull back curtain on corporate lobbying of EUOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A commission spokesman said it upheld the highest standards of governance and transparency. The EU body received about 700 access requests for records each year, with documents released in nearly 80 per cent of cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The EU\u2019s relations with US tech multinationals has taken on a particular political sensitivity since the start of Donald Trump\u2019s second term. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Big Tech bros, feeling confident the full weight of the White House is behind them, have become more aggressive in pushing back. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">X owner Elon Musk, Apple and Meta owner Mark Zuckerberg have turned up the pressure on Brussels to roll back its digital regulations. The companies rankle at fines for failing to comply with the bloc\u2019s online guardrails, but they really take issue with EU rulings that direct changes to how they can operate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US state department fired a shot across regulators\u2019 bows late last year. Washington took the unprecedented step of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/2025\/12\/24\/ex-eu-commissioner-and-activists-barred-from-us-in-attack-on-european-tech-regulators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/2025\/12\/24\/ex-eu-commissioner-and-activists-barred-from-us-in-attack-on-european-tech-regulators\/\">issuing a travel ban<\/a> to former commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/thierry-breton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/thierry-breton\/\">Thierry Breton<\/a>, the previous enforcer of EU tech rules.
