The calf, MSCHF explained, would be presold as 1,200 hamburgers and four leather handbags dubbed \u201cAngus Tokens\u201d to be produced once the animal reached slaughtering age. The catch? If over half of the buyers cancel their purchases by 13 March 2026 via an online \u201cremorse portal\u201d, Angus will be saved and live the rest of his life in an animal sanctuary. With just over two months left, the cow\u2019s fate appears bleak as currently less than a third of buyers (31.8% as of this writing) have opted to save Angus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\"><a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/ourcowangus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Our Cow Angus<\/a>, as the project is called, aims to draw attention to the realities of the food industry. According to the <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/esmis.nal.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/release-files\/r207tp32d\/k930dv029\/1v53mt52h\/lsan0425.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">United States Department of Agriculture<\/a>, roughly 32 million cattle and calves were slaughtered in the country for beef production in 2024. On Angus\u2019s website, MSCHF notes the impact of meat consumption on climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cMuch of MSCHF&#8217;s work revolves around creating fantastic economic transactions and relationships in the business-product-consumer triad; it\u2019s central to such speculative\/critical commercial arrangements that we do exactly what we say we will,\u201d MSCHF co-founder Kevin Wiesner tells The Art Newspaper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">By making Angus a spectacle, MSCHF has conceptually narrowed the gap between consumption and production, rendering his circumstances a microcosm of what happens on an immense scale globally. While humane slaughter regulations exist, expos\u00e9s and documentaries abound that reveal deplorable conditions for many animals bred for slaughter. Others have implored commenters to consider their own meat consumption, noting that Angus is just one cow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cPeople are certainly taken with Angus, and we continue to be asked about him frequently,\u201d Wiesner says. \u201cMy favourite was a group of students who kept mis-naming the project \u2018Our Friend Angus\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">MSCHF is known for cooking up projects that elicit strong responses. In 2022, the group <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2022\/12\/01\/cheeky-atm-installation-sells-for-75000-and-will-go-on-public-display-in-miami\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">installed an ATM<\/a> at Art Basel Miami Beach with Perrotin that ranked users by the funds in their bank accounts, displaying the amount publicly on the screen in an absurd gamification of wealth. The following year, MSCHF created a <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2023\/06\/20\/a-purse-for-ants-brooklyn-collective-mschf-design-microscopic-louis-vuitton-handbag-smaller-than-a-grain-of-salt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">microscopic Louis Vuitton handbag<\/a> barely visible to the naked eye to critique the fashion industry. In perhaps its most contentious endeavour, MSCHF partnered with musician Lil Nas X to create <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/lil-nas-x-mschf-satan-nike-shoes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">custom Nike shoes<\/a> with satanic imagery and a drop of human blood. The project garnered significant backlash, including a lawsuit from Nike and disapproval from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta).<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">While Peta did not respond to a request for comment regarding Our Cow Angus, the organisation <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91153256\/do-you-want-this-burger-or-do-you-want-this-baby-cow-to-live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told<\/a> Fast Company in 2024: \u201cAt a time when most people wish to see violence diffused, it\u2019s shameful for MSCHF to make a game out of snuffing out a life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">For its part, MSCHF says Our Cow Angus is about \u201cactionable individual regret\u201d. While the collective technically has control over Angus\u2019s fate, it plans to uphold the decisions of the buyers. \u201cWe will absolutely turn Angus into burgers and bags and fulfil everyone\u2019s orders if it comes to it,\u201d says Wiesner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">So far, he adds, the return of Angus Tokens have been better than the group expected. At its core, Our Cow Angus is about consumerism, and secondary market transactions are an important layer of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Unsurprisingly, the project\u2019s resale prices have increased significantly. As of this writing a token representing a three-pack of hamburgers that originally sold for $35 is on offer for $298 on StockX.
