{"id":273945,"date":"2026-01-08T10:49:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T10:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/273945\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T10:49:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T10:49:09","slug":"funding-approval-for-dart-south-west-could-be-brought-forward-to-pre-2030-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/273945\/","title":{"rendered":"Funding approval for Dart+ South West could be brought forward to pre-2030 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Government may reconsider its decision to delay the funding of the \u20ac1 billion Dart+ South West project to beyond 2030, following intensive engagement by politicians and Iarnr\u00f3d \u00c9ireann. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The ambitious project, which proposes a high-capacity commuter train service between Connolly Station, Heuston Station and Hazelhatch, Co Kildare, received planning approval in November 2024. Construction was expected to commence in 2027 and be complete by 2032. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish Rail project received a setback in November, however, when the Government\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-development-plan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-development-plan\/\">National Development Plan (NDP)<\/a> allotted no funding to it until after 2030, essentially pushing back its completion to the latter half of next decade. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The upgrade would see a quadrupling of passenger capacity from 5,000 to 20,000 each way during peak hours. This would cater for a rapidly increasing commuter population in large new housing developments planned for west Dublin and  north Kildare. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The upgrade will see the electrification of 20km of the line from Hazelhatch and Celbridge to Heuston, as well as the Phoenix Park tunnel branch line. The line capacity would be increased from two tracks to four between Park West and Cherry Orchard stations. In addition, two new stations would be constructed: Heuston West  (close to Islandbridge) and Kylemore, which would serve Ballyfermot. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iarnrod-eireann\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iarnrod-eireann\/\">Iarnr\u00f3d \u00c9ireann<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-transport-authority\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-transport-authority\/\">National Transport Authority<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/south-dublin-county-council\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/south-dublin-county-council\/\">South Dublin County Council<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kildare-county-council\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kildare-county-council\/\">Kildare County Council<\/a> had expected construction contracts would be ready for tendering in 2026. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Since the publication of the NDP, TDs from Government and Opposition parties, based in constituencies along the route of the proposed service, have been lobbying to have the delay reversed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/transport\/2025\/11\/27\/dart-and-luas-projects-delayed-in-development-plan-could-be-accelerated-says-minister\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dart and Luas projects delayed in development plan could be accelerated, says MinisterOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking before Christmas, Minister for Transport <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/darragh-o-brien\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/darragh-o-brien\/\">Darragh O\u2019Brien<\/a> indicated that while the new service is not due to commence construction until after 2030, the timing was not set in stone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, he said there were issues around train storage and how the service would interact with another proposed service, Dart+ West. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr O\u2019Brien dismissed suggestions the project was being long-fingered. \u201cIt\u2019s a very important project and I want to see it delivered,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He added there was \u201cflexibility\u201d within the NDP with regard to delivery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cTimeframes in the NDP are indicative. It is a scheme that I would like to see us advance and I think that we can advance it,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fianna F\u00e1il TD Naoise \u00d3 Cear\u00fail,  for Kildare North, said he and party colleague Shane  Moynihan (Dublin Mid-West) had engaged with Mr O\u2019Brien and with Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin on the issue, and was \u201chopeful\u201d of receiving a positive update from Government in the coming weeks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnyone using the M4 or the M7 on a daily basis can see how bad congestion has become, and it\u2019s only going to get worse if we don\u2019t change course.
