{"id":274270,"date":"2026-01-08T15:22:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T15:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/274270\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T15:22:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T15:22:12","slug":"call-to-fast-track-bill-to-criminalise-ai-deepfakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/274270\/","title":{"rendered":"Call to fast track Bill to criminalise AI deepfakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Chair of Oireachtas Committee on <strong>Artificial Intelligence<\/strong> has urged the Government to <strong>fast-track<\/strong> a <strong>bill<\/strong> to address the problem of <strong>AI deepfakes<\/strong> and <strong>nudification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Fianna F\u00e1il TD Malcolm Byrne said that the Protection of Voice and Image Bill 2025 &#8220;anticipated the problems that around the weaponisation for AI for sexual purposes that have become apparent this week&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>AI chatbot Grok, developed by Elon Musk, has recently come under fire over its generation of nude deepfake images of people.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Byrne introduced the Bill in the D\u00e1il along with Deputy Naoise O\u2019Cearuil last April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe misuse of someone\u2019s image or voice without their consent for malign purposes should be a criminal offence,&#8221; Mr Byrne said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis Bill provides a strong framework to do that, and I hope the Government will consider it as a practical starting point for urgently needed legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"not-prose no-underline\" data-action=\"click\" data-category=\"Read more article clicked\" data-label=\"https:\/\/www.breakingnews.ie\/ireland\/human-rights-expert-questions-irelands-protections-in-wake-of-sexualised-grok-deepfakes-1849599.html\" data-value=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breakingnews.ie\/ireland\/human-rights-expert-questions-irelands-protections-in-wake-of-sexualised-grok-deepfakes-1849599.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>        <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/gettyimages-2193603584-e1767781972829.jpg\" class=\"rounded-sm object-contain bg-transparent z-10 w-full h-full not-prose\" alt=\"Human Rights Expert Questions Ireland'S Protections In Wake Of Sexualised Grok Deepfakes\" width=\"278\" height=\"156\" \/><\/p>\n<p>        Ireland<\/p>\n<p>Human rights expert questions Ireland&#8217;s protections in wake of sexualised Grok deepfakes<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mr Byrne also suggested that the Attorney General\u2019s office could play a valuable role in exploring the use of AI to support the legislative drafting process, highlighting its potential to deliver significant efficiencies and enable the Government to respond more quickly to emerging trends that require urgent action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to embrace the benefits of AI across Government and within the legislative process.
