{"id":274705,"date":"2026-01-08T20:34:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T20:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/274705\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T20:34:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T20:34:07","slug":"birth-of-rare-mountain-gorilla-twins-recorded-in-congo-park-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/274705\/","title":{"rendered":"Birth of rare mountain gorilla twins recorded in Congo park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jan 7 (Reuters) &#8211; A mountain gorilla has given birth to twins in war-ravaged eastern Congo, a national park said on Wednesday, in what it described as &#8220;a major event&#8221; for the endangered subspecies.<\/p>\n<p>The birth of the two male gorillas to a mother named Mafuko was discovered on January 3 and the twins &#8220;appeared to be in healthy condition at the time of the observation&#8221;, Virunga National Park said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"promo-box\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__dark-grey__UFC18 text-module__regular__qJJtA text-module__small__sph8i body-module__base__o--Cl body-module__small_body__gOmDf article-body-module__promo-box__hVl8h\"> Sign up  <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/birth-rare-mountain-gorilla-twins-recorded-congo-park-2026-01-07\/undefined?location=article-paragraph&amp;redirectUrl=%2Fworld%2Fafrica%2Fbirth-rare-mountain-gorilla-twins-recorded-congo-park-2026-01-07%2F\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Spanning more than 3,000 square miles, Africa&#8217;s oldest national park is home to many of the world&#8217;s last mountain gorillas, yet much of the park is under rebel control and fighting has accelerated forest loss.<\/p>\n<p>Caring for twins can be challenging, &#8220;particularly during the early months when infants are entirely dependent on their mother for care and transport&#8221;, the park&#8217;s statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The newborns are being closely monitored to help ensure their survival, it said.<\/p>\n<p>Pictures released by the park&#8217;s press service showed the 22-year-old Mafuko holding the two baby gorillas, sitting on the ground and partly obscured by branches with green leaves.<\/p>\n<p>Mafuko was born into the Kabirizi family but joined the Bageni family six years after her mother was killed by &#8220;armed individuals&#8221; in 2007, the park&#8217;s statement said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The birth of these twins represents a major event for the dynamics of the Bageni family and for ongoing conservation efforts to support the continued growth of the endangered mountain gorilla population within Virunga National Park,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>In total, Mafuko has now had seven offspring, including a set of twins which died a week after being born in 2016.
