{"id":27480,"date":"2025-08-27T22:53:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T22:53:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/27480\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T22:53:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T22:53:07","slug":"ryanair-to-raise-bonuses-for-catching-passengers-with-oversized-bags-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/27480\/","title":{"rendered":"Ryanair to raise bonuses for catching passengers with oversized bags \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph  \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ryanair\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ryanair\/\">Ryanair<\/a> is planning to raise bonuses for its staff who spot passengers attempting to take oversized baggage on flights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The airline\u2019s chief executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-o-leary\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-o-leary\">Michael O\u2019Leary<\/a> said he makes \u201cabsolutely no apology\u201d for catching people who are \u201cscamming the system\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Speaking at a press conference in central London, Mr O\u2019Leary told reporters the carrier will likely raise incentives for gate staff who intercept passengers trying to bring oversized luggage onboard from \u20ac1.50  to \u20ac2.50  per bag from November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">A monthly cap of \u20ac80 is also set to scrapped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Passengers travelling with Ryanair face strict luggage rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Only one small bag which can fit under the seat in front is included in the lowest fares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/your-money\/2025\/08\/18\/we-dont-have-time-to-waste-dealing-with-stupid-follow-up-questions-from-your-handful-of-readers-ryanair\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryanair: \u2018We don\u2019t have time to waste with stupid follow-up questions from your readers\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Mr O\u2019Leary said: \u201cI make absolutely no apology for it whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cI want our ground handling people to be catching people who are scamming the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">He added: \u201cI am still mystified by the number of people with rucksacks who still think they\u2019re going to get through the gate and we won\u2019t notice the rucksack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cWe will, and you will be paying for the rucksack. You\u2019re not getting on if it doesn\u2019t fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Mr O\u2019Leary said about 200,000 passengers per year are charged luggage fees at airport gates, so \u201cwe have more work to do to get rid of them\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The airline carried 200 million passengers in the year to the end of March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Mr O\u2019Leary added: \u201cWe want everybody to comply with the rules. If you comply with the rules, no issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cWe are running a very efficient, very affordable, very low-cost airline, and we\u2019re not letting anybody get in the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Rory Boland, editor of consumer magazine Which?
