{"id":275175,"date":"2026-01-09T02:26:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T02:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/275175\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T02:26:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T02:26:10","slug":"paris-to-vote-no-on-mercosur-risking-major-diplomatic-setback-for-macron","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/275175\/","title":{"rendered":"Paris to vote \u2018No\u2019 on Mercosur, risking major diplomatic setback for Macron"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n                    Published on                 08\/01\/2026 &#8211; 20:28 GMT+1<br \/>\n                \u2022Updated<br \/>\n                                     20:33\n                                        <\/p>\n<p>France is set to reject the Mercosur deal in a vote among EU member states, after months of efforts by Paris to build a blocking minority against the contentious accord.<\/p>\n<p>If, as signals suggest, Italy backs the agreement, it would represent a severe diplomatic defeat for Macron, whose strategy to derail the deal would collapse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrance has decided to vote against the signing of the agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries,\u201d Macron posted on X.<\/p>\n<p>He said the \u201cEU-Mercosur agreement is a deal from another era, negotiated for too long on outdated foundations,\u201d adding that the economic benefits \u201cwould be limited for French and European growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does not justify exposing sensitive agricultural sectors that are essential to our food sovereignty,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Paris failure to build a blocking minority<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2024\/12\/06\/von-der-leyen-clinches-eu-mercosur-trade-deal-in-face-of-french-opposition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Mercosur agreement was clinched in December 2024<\/strong><\/a> by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, aiming to create a free-trade area of about 700 million people across the Atlantic after more than 25 years of negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>France has opposed the deal at every phase, citing concerns about unfair competition from Latin American imports and under pressure domestically from its farmers. <\/p>\n<p>Amid rising geoeconomic tensions, supporters led by Germany and Spain have pushed for a swift signing to open new export markets.<\/p>\n<p>The signature was postponed following an EU summit last month after Italy and France expressed reservations. The Commission suggested these issues could be addressed and the signature would go ahead in January. <\/p>\n<p>Paris intensified efforts in recent weeks to assemble a blocking minority, securing backing from Poland, Hungary, Ireland and possibly Austria.
