{"id":275617,"date":"2026-01-09T08:32:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T08:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/275617\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T08:32:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T08:32:07","slug":"cork-and-galway-hospitals-have-persistent-overcrowding-issue-says-minister-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/275617\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork and Galway hospitals have \u2018persistent\u2019 overcrowding issue, says Minister \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cork and Galway hospitals have \u201cpersistent difficulty\u201d with overcrowding and are behind the other hospitals in improving the situation, Minister for Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll-macneill\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll-macneill\/\">Jennifer Carroll MacNeill<\/a> has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The hospital system coped better than initially modelled during the peak of flu on Christmas week. However, the numbers on trolleys this week have risen again as normal service resumes and flu circulates due to the increased socialisation over the festive period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Official figures from the HSE show there were 442 patients waiting on trolleys at 8am on Thursday, with a further 691 patients in surge capacity beds. These are additional inpatient beds temporarily placed in other areas of the hospital to meet demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A total of 75 patients were waiting more than 24 hours, of whom 14 were 75 years or older.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork-university-hospital\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork-university-hospital\/\">Cork University Hospital<\/a> (CUH) had the highest number of patients on trolleys at 55, followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway-university-hospitals\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway-university-hospitals\/\">Galway University Hospital<\/a> at 51.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking to reporters in her office in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-health\/\">Department of Health<\/a>, Ms Carroll MacNeill said she is \u201cnot happy that there are too many people on trolleys in Cork and Galway in particular\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cPeople are just as sick with the flu in the areas around the Mater or Beaumont and their performance and the management of their hospital flow, the discharging and how they\u2019re supporting patients is consistently better,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBeaumont had a difficult day, one day this week, but they managed it and recovered it. The same with Drogheda, they had a difficult day but they managed it and recovered it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Minister said the \u201cpersistent, persistent issues\u201d in these areas indicates they are \u201cfurther behind on the process changes\u201d that have reduced congestion in other sites, such as increased discharges and weekend work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2026\/01\/07\/flu-hospitalisations-up-by-a-third-in-one-week-hse-figures-show\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Flu hospitalisations up by a third in one week, HSE figures showOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Carroll MacNeill commended Limerick hospital, which she said is \u201cperforming really well\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey\u2019re discharging 100 people a day despite very increased attendances. While they do have challenges on trolleys, it\u2019s not for the same reasons as Cork and Galway where attendances haven\u2019t increased to the same rate,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey simply [are] not discharging at the same rate and are not using the broader facilities that are available. For example, there are people on trolleys in the Mercy Hospital or in CUH [Cork University Hospital] but there are empty beds in Mallow. I couldn\u2019t talk to people in Cork about that and suggest that it was satisfactory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Minister said they had set up a \u201ccontrol room\u201d in CUH to enable discharge throughout the Cork region with knowledge of available capacity in other healthcare facilities in the county.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201c[It was] to make sure that we were using all those facilities, and I can\u2019t say to you that that is the case yet,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf there have been 10 beds available in Mallow and 20 people on trolleys in Mercy and that\u2019s happened two, three, four, 10 or 20 times, that\u2019s a problem.
