href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\">European Union<\/a> trade deal with a South American bloc in a move that risks damaging relations with Brussels but preserves Coalition stability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Taoiseach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\">Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/01\/08\/ireland-will-vote-against-the-mercosur-trade-deal-taoiseach-and-tanaiste-confirm\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/01\/08\/ireland-will-vote-against-the-mercosur-trade-deal-taoiseach-and-tanaiste-confirm\/\">decision<\/a>, which came after speculation that the Coalition could change course and back the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mercosur\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mercosur\/\">Mercosur<\/a> agreement, was due to inadequate concessions by Brussels which had not allayed the concerns of Irish farmers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">T\u00e1naiste <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\">Simon Harris<\/a> said it was in line with a programme for government commitment to oppose the deal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Supporting the deal would have faced strong resistance from the farming lobby and Independents supporting the Government, both of which welcomed the news. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dublin was buoyed on Thursday evening when the French government confirmed it too will oppose the deal, although the trade agreement is still expected to pass with the support of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/italy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/italy\/\">Italy<\/a> in a vote on Friday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\">European Commission<\/a> officials were publicly and privately critical of the Government decision. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Peter Power, the head of the European Commission representation in Ireland, told RT\u00c9 Radio that Ireland\u2019s concerns had been listened to and accommodated. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt is a big disappointment,\u201d he said, questioning whether the deal would now go through at all. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Power said the concerns were legitimate, but the farming lobby had exaggerated the impact of the deal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIreland\u2019s voice in this will be diminished somewhat,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mercosur is a South American free-trade bloc consisting, for the purposes of the deal, of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/brazil\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/brazil\/\">Brazil<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/argentina\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/argentina\/\">Argentina<\/a>, Uruguay and Paraguay. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Its major exports to the EU include agricultural products and minerals, while the EU exports machinery, chemicals and pharmaceuticals in return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\">Fianna F\u00e1il<\/a> MEP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barry-andrews\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barry-andrews\/\">Barry Andrews<\/a> also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/01\/08\/government-failed-utterly-to-stop-mercosur-deal-says-mary-lou-mcdonald\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/01\/08\/government-failed-utterly-to-stop-mercosur-deal-says-mary-lou-mcdonald\/\">indicated his disappointment<\/a>, saying the decision was a \u201ctestament to the power of the agricultural body\u201d but that the debate in Ireland had \u201cfocused exclusively on beef\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While he said that was an important element, other sectors stood to \u201cobviously benefit\u201d. This had been \u201ccompletely ignored and set to one side\u201d during the debate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Two senior commission officials separately expressed the view it would specifically harm relations between the Government and commission president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A third official expressed the view it would hurt relations between Ireland and the commission without mentioning Ms von der Leyen by name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the wake of the decision, a Fianna F\u00e1il figure expressed concern about the potential impact on relations with Brussels, including accommodating future Irish \u201casks\u201d in areas such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/common-agricultural-policy-cap\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/common-agricultural-policy-cap\/\">Common Agricultural Policy<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\">Fine Gael<\/a> sources accepted there would be unhappiness in Brussels, but they expressed the view that Ireland was now among the biggest contributors to the EU budget on a per-capita basis, with one arguing the Government had acted in line with its mandate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister of State for European Affairs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/thomas-byrne\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/thomas-byrne\/\">Thomas Byrne<\/a> said that, notwithstanding the Government decision, Ireland would likely be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the deal, including the agri-food sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Mercosur deal will also need to be agreed by a majority of MEPs in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-parliament\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-parliament\/\">European Parliament<\/a>, where voting coalitions have become much more volatile and unpredictable. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Should national governments approve the trade agreement on Friday, the European Parliament would vote in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Government has decided not to back a significant European Union trade deal with a South American bloc&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":88781,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[40],"tags":[9,10,18,13,14,6,19,17,7335,11,12,15,16,5,7,8],"class_list":{"0":"post-275655","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-ireland","8":"tag-breaking-news","9":"tag-breakingnews","10":"tag-eire","11":"tag-featured-news","12":"tag-featurednews","13":"tag-headlines","14":"tag-ie","15":"tag-ireland","16":"tag-irish-politics","17":"tag-latest-news","18":"tag-latestnews","19":"tag-main-news","20":"tag-mainnews","21":"tag-news","22":"tag-top-stories","23":"tag-topstories"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@ie\/115864338661176003","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/275655","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=275655"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/275655\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/88781"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=275655"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=275655"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=275655"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
