{"id":275670,"date":"2026-01-09T09:16:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T09:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/275670\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T09:16:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T09:16:08","slug":"crawford-art-gallery-unlikely-to-reopen-before-christmas-2028-after-e93m-revamp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/275670\/","title":{"rendered":"Crawford Art Gallery unlikely to reopen before Christmas 2028 after \u20ac93m revamp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is unlikely that the Crawford Art Gallery, which closed for renovation last September, will reopen before Christmas 2028.<\/p>\n<p>The extensive refurbishment works \u2014 which come with a \u20ac93m price-tag \u2014 commenced this month and have been given a 123-week time frame for completion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">That would mean the work would likely be completed by mid-April, 2028, but the gallery\u2019s director, Mary McCarthy, said a months-long process of fit-out, commissioning and re-occupation of the gallery would then follow. She said it was her intention that the gallery reopen before Christmas 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt took us a year to get out, but we hope we can come back in a more phased basis to bring the collection back into the building, and to put it back on the walls, and to get the caf\u00e9 and the visitors\u2019 services open. It really will depend on the handover of the building and that process,\u201d Ms McCarthy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">She said the gallery staff would endeavour to keep as brief as possible the process of restocking, and she expected to be able to offer a firm update during the first half of this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ms McCarthy said: &#8220;We will definitely do our absolute best to open within the calendar year of 2028, and it is our intention to get this service back open for the people of Cork and the city centre as soon as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4925003_12_articleinline_GalleryAcquisitionsCAG2024_JC_002_1_.jpg\" alt=\"The gallery\u2019s director, Mary McCarthy, said a months-long process of fit-out, commissioning and re-occupation of the gallery would follow renovations. File photo: Joleen Cronin<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The refurbishment, which is being carried out for the Office of Public Works by contractor PJ Hegarty and Sons, will encompass a five-storey extension and a new restaurant, and will give the gallery an additional 50% in exhibition and storage space for its 3,500-item collection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The cost of the works has more than trebled since an initial 2020 estimate of \u20ac29m. In November, arts minister Patrick O\u2019Donovan said the work is now budgeted at \u20ac93.1m, a figure which includes Vat and a provision for contingency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">As of November, he said, \u20ac6.5m had already been spent. File photo<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In December, Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin said the project was \u201cof a different scale from what originally conceived\u201d, describing it as \u201cmuch more exciting\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">First built in 1724 as a custom house, the Crawford has in the past operated as a school of art, a municipal art gallery, and a national cultural institution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Crawford also served, from 1892, as Cork\u2019s first public reading room, recording in its first year as many as 500 visitors a day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The following year it offered Cork its first lending library service, hosting Ireland\u2019s first library collection of children\u2019s books.
