The primordial object has an orbit that takes it beyond the path of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter<\/a> before careening back inwards towards <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a> \u2014 a journey that it makes roughly once every eight years, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ssd.jpl.nasa.gov\/tools\/sbdb_lookup.html#\/?sstr=24P&amp;view=VOPDC\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ssd.jpl.nasa.gov\/tools\/sbdb_lookup.html#\/?sstr=24P&amp;view=VOPDC\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"5eefb8f5-41df-4b78-a70a-da809b541de8-1\">Comets tend to be at their brightest around <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-perihelion\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-perihelion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">perihelion<\/a>, when the increase in solar heating causes icy material in their central coma to vaporize and feed the envelope of gas surrounding the solid nucleus. This gas catches and reflects the sun&#8217;s light, which can cause the comet to brighten significantly, occasionally rendering them visible to the naked eye in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>&#8216;s night sky.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-23ec2173-6d77-4b8a-a101-cb4a59dd1c66\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Will comet 24P\/Schaumasse be visible to the naked eye? <\/p>\n<p>Magnitude<\/p>\n<p class=\"fancy-box__body-text\">Magnitude is the scale used to measure the apparent brightness of objects in the night sky. The lower the number, the brighter the object! For context, the brightest stars are around Mag +1, while a full moon is -13 and the sun is -27.<\/p>\n<p id=\"61b012ba-dd0d-41ea-b6ea-e05059c56294\">24P\/Schaumasse will make its closest pass of the sun on Jan. 8, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in-the-sky.org\/news.php?id=2026_19_0024P_100\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/in-the-sky.org\/news.php?id=2026_19_0024P_100\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">In-the-sky<\/a>, when it will pass 109.7 million miles (177 million kilometers) from our parent star. The comet currently has an observed brightness, or <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21640-star-luminosity-and-magnitude.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21640-star-luminosity-and-magnitude.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">magnitude<\/a>, of approximately +10.8, per the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/cobs.si\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/cobs.si\/home\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Comet Observation Database<\/a> (COBS) run by the Crni Vrh Observatory in Slovenia.<\/p>\n<p>That places it well beyond the detection threshold of the unaided human eye, which is capable of resolving objects with a magnitude of around +6.5 under dark sky conditions (on the magnitude scale used by astronomers, lower numbers signify brighter objects). (Image credit: TheSkyLive.com)<\/p>\n<p id=\"3645ed56-e911-44cf-b199-73be4767e4f8\">To find 24P\/Schaumasse, first locate the stars of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17021-virgo-constellation.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17021-virgo-constellation.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">constellation Virgo<\/a> high above the southern horizon. The best time to hunt for the comet is in the predawn hours, when the constellation Virgo will have risen high in the sky.
