{"id":275781,"date":"2026-01-09T10:49:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T10:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/275781\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T10:49:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T10:49:08","slug":"aib-plans-to-launch-next-generation-mobile-app-this-year-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/275781\/","title":{"rendered":"AIB plans to launch \u2018next generation\u2019 mobile app this year \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aib\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aib\">AIB<\/a> is planning to launch a \u201cnew, next generation\u201d app for customers in the second half of this year, marking the biggest overhaul of its mobile offering in more than a decade. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019m really pleased with the shape it\u2019s taking,\u201d chief executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/colin-hunt\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/colin-hunt\">Colin Hunt<\/a> said in an interview with The Irish Times. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be far more intuitive and far easier to use, and it\u2019s going to be more encompassing of all aspects of a person\u2019s financial life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A pilot phase of the  app will be released  initially with a small group of customers with a view to having it on offer to all customers later in 2026, a spokesman for the bank said in response to follow-up questions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have been very thoughtful about this change to ensure this is not just about delivering short-term functionality,\u201d he said. \u201cWe took a ground-up approach to fundamentally change the way we deliver our digital services to ensure we are consistently able to evolve to meet our customers\u2019 needs over the long term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">AIB declined to comment on specific  features that will be available in the  new version of the app, or the cost of the rewrite. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, the spokesman said customers will have access to \u201cmuch deeper insights\u201d into their finances and  key services \u201cwill feel much simpler\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Changes to the foundations of the app will mean AIB can consistently deliver future innovations in a much faster and secure way, moving from quarterly updates to updates every few weeks where appropriate, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The project falls within the annual \u20ac300 million budget AIB set for technology investment in its current strategic plan, spanning 2024 to 2026. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A review of Irish banking apps last year by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bonkers-ie\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bonkers-ie\/\">Bonkers.ie<\/a>, the financial services and utilities comparison website, said that while AIB\u2019s existing mobile app was the best of the three domestic banks, it fell far short of the offering of neobanks Revolut and N26. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/financial-services\/2026\/01\/05\/down-to-the-wire-ecbs-digital-euro-project-faces-decisive-vote-in-2026\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Down to the wire\u2019: ECB\u2019s digital euro project faces decisive vote in 2026Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Customers of AIB, which launched its first app in 2011, and other Irish banks have also had to deal with periodic outages and glitches with mobile banking services. Last Friday, thousands of customers with  android devices were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/01\/02\/aib-working-to-resolve-issue-affecting-android-banking-app\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/01\/02\/aib-working-to-resolve-issue-affecting-android-banking-app\/\">unable to use its mobile app<\/a> and online banking for hours as the bank dealt with a technical issue. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/09\/08\/irish-banks-to-take-on-revolut-with-new-instant-mobile-payments-plan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/09\/08\/irish-banks-to-take-on-revolut-with-new-instant-mobile-payments-plan\/\">Zippay<\/a>, the planned new integrated mobile payments service being launched by AIB, Bank of Ireland and PTSB \u201cin early 2026\u201d,  will be integrated into AIB\u2019s existing app, as its launch is scheduled to take place in advance of the bank\u2019s new app. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While the digitisation of banking continues at pace, a number of European governments, including those of Austria, Finland and the Netherlands, have recommended in the past year that households hold small amounts of cash in case of disruptions to online payment systems or other emergencies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-central-bank-ecb\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-central-bank-ecb\/\">ECB<\/a> paper published in September said eurozone households should keep emergency cash at home, arguing that banknotes remain a vital safeguard when digital systems fail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It followed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/people\/2025\/03\/28\/eu-call-to-stockpile-food-and-essentials-what-would-be-in-your-72-hour-survival-bag\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/people\/2025\/03\/28\/eu-call-to-stockpile-food-and-essentials-what-would-be-in-your-72-hour-survival-bag\/\">advice from the European Commission<\/a> earlier in the year that citizens to keep enough cash, food, water and medicines to cope with at least 72 hours of service disruption. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-war\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-war\/\">war in Ukraine<\/a>, the Covid-19 pandemic, natural disasters such as wildfires and floods, and April\u2019s  power outage across Spain and Portugal, have highlighted Europe\u2019s vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish Government is also  preparing advice for households to keep small amounts of cash in case of emergencies.
