{"id":275972,"date":"2026-01-09T13:28:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T13:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/275972\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T13:28:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T13:28:14","slug":"fog-architecture-designs-minimalist-shanghai-residence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/275972\/","title":{"rendered":"FOG Architecture designs minimalist Shanghai residence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/fog-architecture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FOG Architecture<\/a> used tactile materials and natural lighting to create a calm, soothing atmosphere in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/shanghai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shanghai<\/a> home.<\/p>\n<p>Located in the western suburbs of Shanghai, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/china\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China<\/a>, the renovated three-storey villa features plenty of curved lines, designed to connect various functions and create an adaptable, flexible interior for its multigenerational residents.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2284640 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fog-architecture-shanghai-xijiao-residence-house-residential-interiors_dezeen_1704_col_2-852x609.jpg\" alt=\"Shanghai Xijiao Residence by FOG Architecture\" width=\"1704\" height=\"1217\"  \/>FOG Architecture added curved lines to the interiors to soften the space<\/p>\n<p>According to the studio, the 500-square-metre villa&#8217;s interior was also designed to create a &#8220;soft yet steady&#8221; atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seen through a female perspective, the project cultivates a spatial temperament that is soft yet steady \u2013 not fragile, but resilient, porous, and deeply attuned to everyday life,&#8221; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fogarchitecture.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FOG Architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2284651 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fog-architecture-shanghai-xijiao-residence-house-residential-interiors_dezeen_1704_col_13-852x1193.j.jpeg\" alt=\"Shanghai Xijiao Residence by FOG Architecture\" width=\"1688\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Full-size windows invite natural light in<\/p>\n<p>The studio focused on the tactility of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/technology\/materials\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">materials<\/a> used and added large windows to put natural lighting at the centre of the villa&#8217;s minimalist interior design.<\/p>\n<p>Textured walls, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/terrazzo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terrazzo<\/a> floors, wood-grain concrete, metal and natural textiles come together to create an open, airy atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2284649 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fog-architecture-shanghai-xijiao-residence-house-residential-interiors_dezeen_1704_col_11-852x1193.j.jpeg\" alt=\"Shanghai Xijiao Residence by FOG Architecture\" width=\"1688\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The villa&#8217;s interior has a pale and light colour palette<\/p>\n<p>A sandy-hued colour palette was used consistently throughout the space to further highlight the tactility of the different materials.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The design resists spectacle in favour of tactility, light, and lived experience,&#8221; explained FOG Architecture.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Each floor can function independently yet overlaps with the others, offering three generations moments of solitude as well as connection,&#8221; it continued.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2284641 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fog-architecture-shanghai-xijiao-residence-house-residential-interiors_dezeen_1704_col_3-852x1193.jp.jpeg\" alt=\"Shanghai Xijiao Residence by FOG Architecture\" width=\"1688\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Skylights on the upper floors light up the rooms<\/p>\n<p>Large windows on the ground level invite natural light and garden views into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/living-rooms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">living room<\/a>, where the family hosts friends and gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>In the basement, FOG Architecture used textured paint on the walls and added wooden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cabinets\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cabinets<\/a> and subtle lighting to create a quiet and comforting environment.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2023\/02\/03\/fog-architecture-beijing-tosummers-flagship-store\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fog-architecture-beijing-tosummers-flagship-store_dezeen_2364_sq_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"ToSummer store in Beijing\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> FOG Architecture transforms Beijing courtyard house into fragrance store\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Designed for the younger generation of the family, the first floor and attic were kept deliberately open-planned with limited fixed furnishing pieces, so that the rooms can be easily reconfigured as the kids grow up.<\/p>\n<p>Skylights on the pitched attic roof invite daylight and create a dynamic shadowplay throughout the day.
