{"id":278375,"date":"2026-01-10T22:23:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T22:23:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/278375\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T22:23:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T22:23:09","slug":"venezuelans-protest-in-dublin-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/278375\/","title":{"rendered":"Venezuelans protest in Dublin \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Venezuelans in Ireland  gathered on Saturday to celebrate the removal of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nicolas-maduro\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nicolas-maduro\/\">Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a> from power and to demand the release of all political prisoners. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The protest, which attracted  about 100 Venezuelans, took place on the Ha\u2019penny Bridge, Dublin city centre. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was the same location where a week earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/01\/03\/protesters-horrified-by-us-actions-to-overthrow-venezuelan-president-nicolas-maduro\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/01\/03\/protesters-horrified-by-us-actions-to-overthrow-venezuelan-president-nicolas-maduro\/\">others had protested against the removal of Maduro<\/a> by the Trump administration in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/2026\/01\/03\/explosions-reported-as-smoke-seen-rising-in-venezuelan-capital-caracas\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/2026\/01\/03\/explosions-reported-as-smoke-seen-rising-in-venezuelan-capital-caracas\/\">January 3rd military operation<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Joel Goelvivas, who has been in Ireland for 12 years, said the previous pro-Maduro demonstration had been notable for the absence of any Venezuelans. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe are here to protest against people who feel they have a right to speak about our country. There are eight million refugees around the world because of the regime and now finally we have some light at the end of the tunnel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe are here to show that we support that Maduro was removed. We don\u2019t care if it was done by America and by Trump or by anyone. We don\u2019t care. We just want him [Maduro] gone.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Maria Gonzalez said: \u201cI want to make sure that everybody knows that Venezuelans are happy. This is just the first step. Venezuela has always been in a dictatorship. The oil has never belonged to us. This is the first step for our freedom.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Maria Gonzalez at a protest demanding democracy and freedom in Venezuela.\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/KVVULW4O5JC3DKX357IW7RZPWM.JPG\"   width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Maria Gonzalez at a protest demanding democracy and freedom in Venezuela. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Many of them spoke ambivalently about US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> and this was reflected in the banner she held, which read: \u201cThis is not about Trump. It\u2019s about this corrupt dictator [Maduro] and the will of the Venezuelan people.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Oraini Ribas, who has been a political refugee in Ireland for the last four years, said: \u201cVenezuelans are happy Maduro is in jail. Do you think <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\">Iran<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cuba\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cuba\">Cuba<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/china\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/china\">China<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\">Russia<\/a> were just in Venezuela for the food? We are here singing that Maduro is a dictator.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Carmen Parada Ortiz held up a picture of her mother Xiomara Ortiz (63), who remains a political prisoner in Venezuela. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The present Venezuelan government, which is the old one with the exception of Maduro,  has released 11 political prisoners under pressure from the US, but more than 1,000 remain in jail. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMy mother has a medical condition. She has no access to a doctor or a lawyer,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201c[In 2024] the Venezuelan people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2024\/09\/09\/venezuela-opposition-leader-edmundo-gonzalez-vows-to-continue-the-fight-from-spain\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2024\/09\/09\/venezuela-opposition-leader-edmundo-gonzalez-vows-to-continue-the-fight-from-spain\/\">voted for Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez<\/a>, but the vote was not respected. We want freedom for Venezuela and freedom from dictatorship.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Another woman who turned up said her father in Venezuela died because he could not get the medical attention he needed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is the system. If you are against the government, they just let you die. My family depends 100 per cent on me. We want the rest of the Maduro government to leave,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her husband said: \u201cEvery Venezuelan has his or her own story of suffering. We left Venezuela because there was no hope.
