The music streaming app that still hasn\u2019t perfected its shuffle algorithm is rolling out\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/765771\/spotify-messages-dms-audio-sharing-feature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/765771\/spotify-messages-dms-audio-sharing-feature\" class=\"sc-4f49155c-0 hLtviE\">in-app messaging<\/a>\u00a0to select markets this week to Free and Premium customers aged 16 or older on mobile devices.<\/p>\n<p>The aptly named\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2025-08-26\/introducing-messages-a-new-way-to-share-what-you-love-on-spotify-with-friends-and-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2025-08-26\/introducing-messages-a-new-way-to-share-what-you-love-on-spotify-with-friends-and-family\/\" class=\"sc-4f49155c-0 hLtviE\">Messages<\/a>\u00a0isn\u2019t intended to replace the usual platforms for recommending your favorite Benson Boone song to friends and loved ones\u2014Spotify wants Messages to complement those avenues while incentivizing you to stay on the app more at a time when it seems pretty important for the company:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spotify is targeting ad revenue to account for 20% of its overall revenue, but it was only at 11% as of June and decreased by 0.7% for <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/q2\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/q2\/\" class=\"sc-4f49155c-0 hLtviE\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Q2<\/a> year over year.<\/li>\n<li>Spotify recently announced an increase in subscription prices for Premium users in many markets outside of the US.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having its 696 million users more engaged can\u2019t hurt when it comes to negotiating ad rates, and the new feature, which Spotify says users want, may make paying a higher monthly fee seem worth it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bottom line<\/strong>: It\u2019s unclear if Messages will allow you to DM birthday wishes to Dua Lipa or any other
