{"id":279646,"date":"2026-01-11T18:11:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T18:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/279646\/"},"modified":"2026-01-11T18:11:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T18:11:07","slug":"thousands-protest-in-minneapolis-over-ice-shooting-of-renee-good-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/279646\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands protest in Minneapolis over Ice shooting of Renee Good \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tens of thousands of people marched through Minneapolis on Saturday to decry the fatal shooting of a woman by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">US<\/a> immigration agent, part of more than 1,000 rallies planned nationwide \u200dthis weekend against the federal government\u2019s deportation drive. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The massive turnout in Minneapolis despite a whipping cold wind underscores how the fatal shooting of 37-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/08\/poet-writer-wife-mom-who-was-renee-nicole-good-the-woman-killed-by-an-ice-agent\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/08\/poet-writer-wife-mom-who-was-renee-nicole-good-the-woman-killed-by-an-ice-agent\/\">Renee Good<\/a> by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ice-us-immigration-and-customs-enforcement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ice-us-immigration-and-customs-enforcement\/\">Ice<\/a>) officer on Wednesday has struck a chord, fuelling protests in major cities and some towns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minnesota\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/democratic-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/democratic-party\">Democratic<\/a> leaders and the administration of US president \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/republican-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/republican-party\">Republican<\/a>, have offered starkly different accounts of the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Led by a team of Indigenous Mexican dancers, demonstrators in Minneapolis, which has a metropolitan population of 3.8 million, marched towards the residential street where Ms Good was shot in her car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The boisterous crowd, which the Minneapolis Police Department estimated in the tens of thousands, chanted Good\u2019s name and slogans such as \u201cAbolish Ice\u201d and \u201cNo justice, no peace \u2013 get Ice off our streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019m insanely angry, completely heartbroken and devastated, and then just like longing and hoping that things get better,\u201d Ellison Montgomery, a 30-year-old protester, told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Indigenous dancers perform as people gather for a march to memorialise Renee Nicole Good and against the influx of federal agents in the city at Powderhorn Park on January 10th in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Photograph: Stephen Maturen\/Getty Images <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minnesota officials have called the shooting \u200cunjustified, pointing to bystander video they say showed Good\u2019s vehicle turning away from the agent as he fired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees Ice, has maintained that the agent acted in self-defence because Good, a volunteer in a community network that monitors and records Ice operations in Minneapolis, drove forward in the direction of \u2060the agent who then shot her, after another agent had approached the driver\u2019s side and told her to get out of the car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The shooting on Wednesday came soon after some 2,000 federal officers were dispatched to the Minneapolis-St. \u200cPaul \u200barea \u200din what DHS has called its largest operation ever, deepening a rift between the administration and Democratic leaders in the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Federal-state tensions escalated further on Thursday when a US Border Patrol agent in Portland, Oregon, shot and wounded a man and woman in their car after an attempted vehicle stop. Using language similar to its description of the Minneapolis incident, DHS said the driver had tried to \u201cweaponise\u201d his vehicle and run over agents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/10\/minneapolis-shooting-new-video-emerges-filmed-by-ice-agent-who-shot-renee-good\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Minneapolis shooting: New video emerges filmed by Ice agent who shot Renee GoodOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The two DHS-related shootings prompted a coalition of progressive and civil rights groups, including Indivisible and the American Civil Liberties Union, to plan more than 1,000 events under the banner \u201cICE Out For \u2060Good\u201d on Saturday and Sunday. The rallies have been scheduled to end before nightfall to minimise the potential for violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In Philadelphia, protesters chanted \u201cICE has got to go\u201d and \u201cNo fascist USA,\u201d as they marched from City Hall to a rally outside a federal detention facility, \u2060according to the local ABC affiliate. In Manhattan, several hundred people carried anti-Ice signs as they \u2060walked past an immigration court where agents have arrested migrants following their hearings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe demand justice for Renee, Ice out of our communities, and action from our elected leaders. Enough is enough,\u201d said Leah Greenberg, co-executive director of Indivisible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minnesota became a major flashpoint in the administration\u2019s efforts to deport millions of immigrants months before the Good shooting, with Trump criticising its Democratic leaders amid a massive welfare fraud \u200dscandal involving some members of the large Somali-American community there.<\/p>\n<p>A US immigration agent shot and killed a 37-year-old woman in her car in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. Video: Caitlin Callenson <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey, a Democrat who has been critical of immigration agents and the shooting, told a press conference earlier on Saturday that the demonstrations have remained mostly peaceful and that anyone damaging property or engaging in unlawful activity would be arrested by police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe will not counter Donald Trump\u2019s chaos with our own brand of chaos,\u201d Frey said. \u201cHe wants us to take the bait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More than 200 law enforcement officers were deployed Friday night to control protests that led to $6,000 in damage at the Depot Renaissance Hotel and failed attempts by some demonstrators to enter the Hilton Canopy Hotel, believed to house Ice agents, the City of Minneapolis said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Police chief Brian O\u2019Hara said some in the crowd scrawled graffiti and damaged windows at the Depot Renaissance Hotel.
