{"id":282270,"date":"2026-01-13T17:00:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T17:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/282270\/"},"modified":"2026-01-13T17:00:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T17:00:11","slug":"jean-kleyn-to-leave-munster-in-favour-of-gloucester-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/282270\/","title":{"rendered":"Jean Kleyn to leave Munster in favour of Gloucester \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/munster-rugby\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/munster-rugby\/\">Munster<\/a> have confirmed South African secondrow Jean Kleyn has agreed a three-year contract with Gloucester and will join the English Premiership side this summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The 32-year-old, who had been offered a contract extension by the province, is currently in his 10th season with Munster, making 160 appearances to date and scoring 15 tries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He made his competitive debut for Munster against Scarlets in September 2016 before making his European debut for the club against Leicester Tigers later that season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He made 13 appearances in his debut campaign before a neck injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season. In his second season with the province, Kleyn was nominated by his fellow players for Munster\u2019s player of the season.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767177708414-69197743-5ee2-4403-b94c-9a36cd6b79cd.jpeg\"\/>How did Leinster pull off their win against La Rochelle?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His performances were recognised further when he was called in to train with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ireland-rugby\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ireland-rugby\/\">Ireland<\/a> squad ahead of the 2019 World Cup, and he made his Ireland debut against Italy in August 2019 before going on to represent Ireland at the tournament in Japan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kleyn earned his 100th cap for Munster against Zebre in January 2022 and started a remarkable 24 games during the 2022\/23 campaign, culminating in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-rugby-championship\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-rugby-championship\/\">URC<\/a> triumph against the Stormers in Cape Town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His excellent form was recognised once again at international level when he was called up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/springboks\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/springboks\/\">Springboks<\/a> squad in 2023 for the Rugby Championship and World Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Paying tribute to Kleyn, Munster Rugby\u2019s general manager Ian Costello said: \u201cJean is an exceptional character and represents everything that is good about Munster. JK has had an immeasurable impact on Munster Rugby both on and off the pitch since joining the province 10 years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cA complete professional, JK is a hugely popular member of the squad, and I know he will be hugely missed by the playing group and all of those who work with him. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe will wish him and his family all the best and as a group we will be highly motivated to ensure this season is a successful and memorable one for JK and his family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kleyn will be available for Munster\u2019s final <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/champions-cup\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/champions-cup\/\">Champions Cup<\/a> pool match against Castres at Thomond Park on Saturday (kick-off 5.30pm) having recovered from a calf injury.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Munster's Craig Casey after the defeat to Toulon last weekend. Photograph: Dan Sheridan\/Inpho <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/craig-casey\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/craig-casey\/\">Craig Casey<\/a> has not yet officially been ruled out for Saturday\u2019s game as he continues to be monitored for a should injury he sustained during last weekend\u2019s defeat to Toulon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While not as bad as first feared, the scrumhalf damaged his A\/C joint and therefore is unlikely to feature against Castres. Ethan Coughlan is expected to make his first European start for Munster, while academy prospect Jake O\u2019Riordan will be on the bench.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sharing an update on Casey\u2019s injury, Munster defence coach Denis Leamy clarified: \u201cWe were very worried after the (Toulon) game, but I think it\u2019s relatively good news. That doesn\u2019t mean he\u2019ll play this weekend, obviously, he\u2019s got a significant injury to his AC, but hopefully it\u2019s not going to be too long term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A statement from the province confirmed: \u201cCraig Casey (shoulder) and Diarmuid Barron (knee) are both being assessed with their availability to be determined later in the week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tom Ahern\u2019s availability for this weekend, having missed the trip to France with a neck issue, will be determined over the next couple of days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/clayton-mcmillan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/clayton-mcmillan\/\">Clayton McMillan<\/a> will also have Oli Jager at his disposal, but will be without scrumhalf Paddy Paterson (head) and winger Calvin Nash (shoulder\/head). <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Patterson took a blow in the warm-up ahead of last weekend\u2019s defeat in Toulon while Nash was forced off late-on in the match.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Calvin Nash scores Munster's first try against Toulon.
