A single class here, a bundle of sessions there. But, aware that the workout form’s promised benefits – from greater strength to improved posture – only truly come with regularity and consistency, I decided to change tack. After all, Google conjures up snaps of Hailey Bieber in a zillion different chic athleisure looks for a reason: the woman knows that it takes time to nail ‘the hundred’ without wanting to die.

It felt like somewhat of a sign when my local studio, Prescription, near my home in Lisbon, ran an alluring special offer on its ‘unlimited’ membership. It meant that I could practically make its warm terracotta-hued walls my second home with no need to count my class packs like usual. And so I did almost daily – squeezing in their 50-minute sessions before work, during lunch breaks and in amongst social plans. While I dabbled in their ‘cardio’ and ‘recovery’ reformer classes with a twist, I mostly stuck to their classic offering.

The first week was the hardest. It felt like every muscle of my body, and ones I didn’t even know existed, were burning – because, unlike so many other things in modern life, there is no frictionless, ‘quick fix’ when it comes to Pilates. My brain also had a workout at the beginning too, as I got used to the correct form (the frequency of my attendance enabling instructors to properly tweak my technique for what felt like the first time, and the small gaps between sessions meant their words properly sunk in).

Before long, I was easing into the rhythm – blending classes into my schedule seamlessly and getting through sports bras and leggings like nobody’s business. Perhaps it’s all the decisions I feel I need to be constantly making elsewhere in my day, but there was something lovely and formulaic about diving into one single workout type – with my only other exercise being long walks and the odd game of padel. I didn’t need to think, just move. And I was seeing progress, too, as I got to grip with the pace of sessions – learning the moments when to really push myself and when to listen to my body and lighten the load.

I was reaching five or six sessions a week on average for the first time – but was that too much time strapped in? ‘Reformer Pilates works best when done consistently,’ says Aimee Victoria Long, a PT and Pilates instructor. ‘When you stay consistent, you’ll notice a stronger and more integrated core and improved posture. Many people also notice their flexibility improving because the machine encourages the body to move with control through a complete range of motion.’

But let’s be clear, this is not HIIT levels of pounding on the body. ‘The reformer’s spring resistance strengthens without heaviness, so you build tone and power while keeping your joints supported,’ notes Long, who also gave her expert thoughts on my newfound regularity. ‘Five or six classes a week can be too much, but it truly depends on how varied in intensity your sessions are structured and how well you recover between them,’ she explains. ‘Pilates is low impact, but it can still challenge the body in a deep, demanding way.’

‘Five or six classes a week can be too much for some, but others may feel wonderful’

Long continues: ‘However, many people will feel wonderful getting on the reformer this many times if your week includes a mix of slower, more restorative sessions alongside higher-energy or strength-focused ones.’ But if your schedule is too tight for almost daily sessions? She insists that you don’t need to be in the studio virtually every day: ‘Practicing two to four times a week still allows the body to adapt, strengthen and build the kind of deep control that gives Pilates its transformative results.’

On that point, I did notice a sweet spot when – due to other commitments or being out of town – my weekly class count inevitably dipped down on occasions. The windows of rest seemed to allow my body a bit more time to recover, which enabled me to give the next session back more oomph. However, I missed it when I was away from the studio for too long. Going regularly enough helped me better gauge the instructors whose styles of teaching I most liked, and I began to recognise faces among my fellow attendees too – the sense of quiet community an unexpected perk for a freelancer living abroad.

Talking of mental health. One of the most unexpected benefits of my reformer Pilates experiment was the stress relief. Classes always began with jumping on a trampoline built into the machine, and it felt like with every bounce my worries were pushed away. ‘This comes from the precision, breath work and intentional movement that are required,’ shares Long. ‘This is why many clients find that Pilates becomes a grounding, almost meditative part of their routine.’ I strangely yearned for the release on my rest days.

But how about how I was feeling physically, after a solid two months of pulsing and engaging? My committed reformer Pilates stint had fallen about ten months after fertility treatment that had left my body feeling quite alien to me. While I had been exercising throughout that interim, this switch up in my workout routine had reconnected me to myself and really moved the needle in terms of full-body muscle power and even visible tone. Ab definition began to reappear, my legs felt leaner and I finally felt confident in the mirror again.

‘The key is to pay attention to how you feel,’ insists Long. ‘Consistent fatigue, soreness that lingers for more than a couple of days or a sense of tightness that doesn’t release with movement can all be signs that you’re over-training – but if you feel energised, supported and able to maintain proper form, this frequency can absolutely work.’ Indeed, as with so much about fitness, the best approach isn’t ‘all or nothing’ but finding a balance that works for you.
