{"id":283700,"date":"2026-01-14T10:28:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T10:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/283700\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T10:28:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T10:28:08","slug":"cork-woman-so-proud-of-her-friend-jessie-buckley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/283700\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork woman \u2018so proud\u2019 of her friend Jessie Buckley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">A Cork-based friend and neighbour of Golden Globe-winning actor Jessie Buckley, has said the Kerry woman\u2019s performance in the screen adaptation of  Hamnet was nothing short of \u201castounding\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Killarney actor Buckley was recognised for her leading role in the film about the life of Shakespeare, at the awards ceremony in Hollywood on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Speaking to  The Echo, Bandon woman Fiona Crowley of the Kerry-based Fiona Crowley Stage School, a friend and neighbour of the actor, said she is \u201cso proud\u201d of the star\u2019s success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cJessie came and worked with us in the stage school after she finished her Leaving Certificate exams,\u201d said Ms Crowley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cShe worked with us for a little while, and then joined the Musical Society in Killarney \u2014 which I\u2019m a member of \u2014 so I used to bring her home from rehearsals, and we got quite close.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">She said it was \u201cfantastic\u201d to see the actor accepting her Golden Globe for  Hamnet on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThe bottom line is that she is the person who needs to take the bow, she did this. It\u2019s just fabulous, I\u2019m so happy for her,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cI\u2019ve watched her in everything. I actually flew to London to watch her first West End performance, so I\u2019ve followed her career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cShe\u2019s getting a lot of accolades and glory now, [and] her performance in  Hamnet was astounding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cShe was raw and gave it everything \u2014 she gives everything her all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Ms Crowley said she believes Jessie\u2019s success is down to her \u201cgrace and dignity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cShe\u2019s the hottest ticket at the moment, but I do think it\u2019s important that, at the Golden Globes, one of the most glitz and glam events in Los Angeles, she thanked the man who made soup in a pot behind his truck \u2014 and that\u2019s genuine \u2014 that\u2019s the Jessie that I knew back in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cYou can be the biggest superstar in the world, but if you haven\u2019t got humility and grace, what do you have?\u201d\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">And she added everyone in the stage school is so proud of her. \u201cIt\u2019s such a fabulous story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Hamnet, which is based on Maggie O\u2019Farrell\u2019s 2020 novel of the same name, follows the family life of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes Hathaway as they cope with the death of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Starring alongside Kildare native, Paul Mescal, who plays William Shakespeare, Ms Buckley, who plays Agnes Hathaway, was honoured in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture \u2014 Drama category.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">While accepting her award, Ms Buckley paid tribute to  Hamnet director, Chlo\u00e9 Zhao, her co-star Mr Mescal, as well as all the cast and crew of the film, with a particular nod to Polish crew member, Tomasz Sternicki, the film\u2019s key grip who, she said, made soup for the crew in his truck.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4930916_3_articleinline_fd40349092264c3098932a78ff315e79.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"Killarney woman Jessie Buckley at the 83rd Golden Globes on Sunday in Beverly Hills. Picture: AP Photo\/Chris Pizzello<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cIt was such an extraordinary set to be part of,\u201d said Ms Buckley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cWe were telling the story of probably the most famous Brit that ever lived, and we had a Chinese director, a lot of Irish, [and] a mostly Polish crew.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cI\u2019d really like to thank our grip, Tomasz because, during shooting, he started to disappear a little bit, and I found him one day at the back of his truck chopping up potatoes, onions, and meat.
