target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\">Iran <\/a>amounted to just under \u20ac5.7 million for the first 10 months of last year and remain a very small component of the State\u2019s overall export trade, figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">With US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> threatening to impose 25 per cent tariffs on any country doing business with Iran amid ongoing protests against the regime, CSO figures indicated that the State exported just under \u20ac40 million of produce there in 2024 while importing \u20ac664,000 worth of goods. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, this fell to just \u20ac5.7 million worth of exports and just over \u20ac1 million in imports for the 10 months to the end of October last year, according to the most up-to-date trade statistics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The bulk of the exports in 2024 (67 per cent) were in two categories: chemicals and materials for beverages and chemical products for industry use. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Decades of western sanctions have battered Iran\u2019s economy, triggering high inflation, unemployment and a precipitous slide in the country\u2019s currency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While the protests began over economic grievances, they have morphed into the biggest anti-government protests in years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Senior industry figures here described the trade between the Republic and Iran as \u201cminimal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They also said that trade data for services between the two states was \u201cslim on the ground\u201d while noting \u201cTrump\u2019s trade policies\u201d have been geared at goods rather than services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEffective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff \u2060of 25 per cent on any and all business being done with the United States of America,\u201d Mr Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis order is final and conclusive,\u201d the US president wrote without providing further details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, there was no official documentation about the policy from the White House on its website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">China is Iran\u2019s largest export market.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>Ireland\u2019s record tax take makes light of Trump tariffs fear<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Beijing imported more than $14 billion (\u20ac12 billion) of products from Iran in the first 10 months of last year, according to figures from Trade Data Monitor which are based on statistics from the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Rapprochement with the West in the form of a deal over Iran\u2019s nuclear ambitions led to a partial lifting of EU and US sanctions in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Department of Agriculture, food export agency Bord Bia and 17 Irish food companies took part in a trade mission to Tehran at the time, as the State eyed Iran as a relatively new and potentially lucrative export market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But this window was closed again in 2018 when the first Trump administration reimposed sanctions and warned that any country doing business with Iran would not be able to trade with the
