Funeral arrangements have been announced for Se\u00e1n \u00d3 S\u00e9, Cork institution and one of the country\u2019s best-loved traditional Irish singers, who passed away on Tuesday, three days short of his 90th birthday.<\/p>\n
Mr \u00d3 S\u00e9, affectionately as \u201cde Pucker\u201d thanks to the song \u2018An Poc Ar Buile\u2019, which he made famous in a 1962 hit single, finished his teaching career as principal of St Mary\u2019s on the Hill in Knocknaheeny.<\/p>\n
In a tribute to his friend, Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin said Mr \u00d3 S\u00e9 had been a kind and caring teacher \u201cwho always put his students first\u201d, and his version of \u2018De Banks\u2019 would forever be associated by generations of Corkonians with triumphant GAA homecomings.<\/p>\n
Born in 1936 on Cork\u2019s South Terrace, Mr \u00d3 S\u00e9 spent his formative years in Ballylickey in West Cork, growing up in an all-Irish-speaking home.<\/p>\n
A gifted tenor, he first came to prominence as a singer in the 1960s with Se\u00e1n \u00d3 Riada\u2019s group Ceolt\u00f3ir\u00ed Chualann, touring internationally with Comhaltas Ceolt\u00f3ir\u00ed \u00c9ireann, and he became synonymous with his interpretation of An Poc ar Buile.<\/p>\n
The Lord Mayor of Cork, councillor Fergal Dennehy, said Mr \u00d3 S\u00e9\u2019s warmth, humour and devotion to tradition had helped to shape the cultural life of Cork and Ireland for generations.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile his voice may have fallen silent, his legacy will live on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Reposing at O\u2019Connor\u2019s funeral home, Wilton from 5pm to 6pm on Thursday, January 15. Requiem Mass in the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Ballinlough, at noon on Friday, with funeral afterwards to the Abbey Cemetery, Bantry, arriving at approximately 3pm.<\/p>\n
