You might imagine a calm, graceful swirl of stars in deep space. But don\u2019t be fooled\u2014astronomers just witnessed a storm of staggering power erupting within it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This stunning spiral galaxy\u2014much like our own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/en\/unprecedented-astronomers-just-spotted-an-extraordinarily-violent-explosion-near-the-milky-way_16516\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Milky Way<\/strong><\/a>\u2014was recently captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. Located roughly 155 million light-years away, it\u2019s become the focus of a groundbreaking discovery by researchers from the Space Research Organisation Netherlands (SRON).<\/p>\n<p>In a study published in Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics, the team explains how they used both the European Space Agency\u2019s XMM-Newton Space Telescope and the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM, a collaboration between JAXA, ESA, and NASA) to investigate NGC 3783 and its central black hole. What they found was astonishing: a brilliant burst of X-rays that vanished almost instantly\u2014followed by winds blasting out matter at nearly 60,000 kilometers per second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s almost unimaginable,\u201d said the researchers. For context, that\u2019s about one-fifth the speed of light.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/supermassive-black-hole-winds-750x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Here, an artist\u2019s impression of the black hole at the heart of NGC 3783, which astronomers studied using the XMM-Newton space telescope and the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM). \u00a9 ESA<\/p>\n<p>A violent magnetic event<\/p>\n<p>The black hole at the galaxy\u2019s core is a true heavyweight\u2014roughly 30 million times the mass of our Sun. It feeds on nearby gas and dust, energizing an incredibly bright, active region at the heart of the spiral. Astronomers call these areas active galactic nuclei, or AGN. They emit every kind of radiation imaginable and shoot out intense jets and <strong>winds<\/strong> across space.<\/p>\n<p>According to the SRON scientists, especially violent winds formed around NGC 3783\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/en\/this-black-hole-merger-shatters-everything-astronomers-thought-possible_18936\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>black hole<\/strong><\/a> when its magnetic field suddenly \u201cuntwisted,\u201d releasing tremendous magnetic energy.<\/p>\n<p>Fun fact: the XMM-Newton Space Telescope has been operating since 1999, exploring some of the hottest and most extreme parts of the cosmos. XRISM joined it in September 2023, designed to study how matter and energy move throughout the Universe. Both telescopes observe in X-rays, revealing details invisible to optical instruments.<\/p>\n<p>These cosmic tempests may sound distant, but they\u2019re not entirely alien. Our own Sun sometimes unleashes similar events\u2014massive solar flares that hurl scorching clouds of matter into space, known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). On November 11, one of these blasts reached speeds of about 1,500 km\/s. That\u2019s modest compared to the 60,000 km\/s winds seen around NGC 3783\u2019s black hole, but the physics behind them is surprisingly familiar.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83c\udd95 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ESA_XMM?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@ESA_XMM<\/a> &amp; XRISM observed an extraordinary blast from a supermassive black hole\ud83d\udca5<\/p>\n<p>They spotted a bright X-ray flare erupting from the gigantic black hole lurking within NGC 3783. Fascinatingly, this suggests that solar and high-<strong>energy<\/strong> processes might operate in remarkably similar ways throughout the Universe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet the interest in AGNs goes beyond pure curiosity. Astronomers know that these turbulent regions play a critical role in shaping their host galaxies and even in the birth of new stars.
