{"id":284698,"date":"2026-01-14T22:45:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T22:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/284698\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T22:45:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T22:45:08","slug":"massive-supernova-explosion-may-have-created-a-binary-black-hole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/284698\/","title":{"rendered":"Massive supernova explosion may have created a binary black hole"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"d5a05d37-db12-4fa9-94fb-2d3f414a26c5\">Astronomers have observed a strange but powerful supernova explosion that not only marked the death of a massive, highly evolved star, but also may have heralded the birth of a pair of binary black holes.<\/p>\n<p>The team behind this discovery studied the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/6638-supernova.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supernova explosion<\/a> SN 2022esa with the 8.2-meter Subaru telescope located at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/26385-keck-observatory.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/26385-keck-observatory.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mauna Kea Observatory<\/a> in Hawaii and the Seimei telescope in Japan.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"d5a05d37-db12-4fa9-94fb-2d3f414a26c5-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">They found the supernova was likely the result of the explosive death of a massive, hot, luminous star at the end of its evolutionary development, known as a &#8220;Wolf-Rayet star.&#8221; This star dwelled in the galaxy 2MFGC 13525, located around 320 million light-years away from Earth.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"19515ecf-a541-4482-ac30-ee5cf07a1477\">The scientists discovered that SN the supernova demonstrated a clear and stable period lasting around a month, which led them to theorize that it was the result of periodic eruptions in this system, one each Earth-year before the final explosion.<\/p>\n<p>That kind of stable periodicity is only possible in a binary system, the researchers say, indicating this doomed<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32689-massive-wolf-rayet-stars-not-fully-understood.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/32689-massive-wolf-rayet-stars-not-fully-understood.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Wolf-Rayet star<\/a> was partnered by either a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15421-black-holes-facts-formation-discovery-sdcmp.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15421-black-holes-facts-formation-discovery-sdcmp.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">black hole<\/a> or a massive star that will one day explode to birth a black hole. The end result in both cases is a black hole binary.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fates of massive stars, the birth of a black hole, or even a black hole binary, are very important questions in astronomy,&#8221; team leader Keiichi Maeda of Kyoto University <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kyoto-u.ac.jp\/en\/research-news\/2026-01-13-2\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.kyoto-u.ac.jp\/en\/research-news\/2026-01-13-2\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said in a statement<\/a>. &#8220;Our study provides a new direction to understand the whole evolutionary history of massive stars toward the formation of black hole binaries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The team&#8217;s findings don&#8217;t just reveal more about binary black holes and their origins; they also demonstrate the power of teaming two different telescopes with different capabilities.
