{"id":28567,"date":"2025-08-28T11:09:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T11:09:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/28567\/"},"modified":"2025-08-28T11:09:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T11:09:14","slug":"aesop-illuminates-cave-like-hainan-store-with-ceiling-oculi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/28567\/","title":{"rendered":"Aesop illuminates cave-like Hainan store with ceiling oculi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Skincare brand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/aesop\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aesop<\/a>&#8216;s first store in Hainan Island, <a href=\"http:\/\/dezeen.com\/tag\/china\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China<\/a>, was designed to evoke an underwater cave and features oculi decorated with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/algae\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">algae<\/a>-based film.<\/p>\n<p>Located within the Haitang Bay Duty Free Shopping Complex in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/sanya\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sanya<\/a> on Hainan Island, the new store was designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aesop.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aesop<\/a>&#8216;s in-house team and draws inspiration from the ocean.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239895 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/aesop-hainan-china-store-algae-materials-interiors_dezeen_1704_col_0-852x579.jpg\" alt=\"Aesop Hainan store interiors\" width=\"1704\" height=\"1158\"  \/>The store is located within a duty-free shopping complex in Sanya, China<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The space is articulated by the compression and expansion of massive proportions, a strong datum, and enormous ceiling oculi that make one feel as if they were immersed in a deep ocean cave, looking up at the wavering light,&#8221; the brand said.<\/p>\n<p>Curved lines frame the entrance of the store, transporting customers into a more intimate space from the open shopping complex. A round niche was designed to reference the porthole of a submarine, in another nod to deep-ocean environments.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239896 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/aesop-hainan-china-store-algae-materials-interiors_dezeen_1704_col_1-852x597.jpg\" alt=\"Aesop Hainan store interiors\" width=\"1704\" height=\"1194\"  \/>The pillar at the front of the store is wrapped in algae-based bioplastic<\/p>\n<p>Algae inspired the design of the store, and the material was also used to create lighting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/installations-tag\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">installations<\/a> suspended from the two ceiling oculi, which were designed to resemble underwater cave entrances.<\/p>\n<p>The larger of the two oculi contains 2,000 aluminium panels coated in an algae-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bioplastic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bioplastic<\/a>. This hangs above a large display table equipped with a series of brass basins at the centre of the store.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239897 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/aesop-hainan-china-store-algae-materials-interiors_dezeen_1704_col_2-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Aesop Hainan store interiors\" width=\"1704\" height=\"1136\"  \/>The store features lighting installations suspended from ceiling oculi<\/p>\n<p>The algae-based bioplastic was developed by Jessie French, an experimental artist and designer based in Melbourne, Australia, whose design studio <a href=\"https:\/\/other-matter.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Other Matter<\/a> explores the application of new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/technology\/materials\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">materials<\/a> as alternatives to petrochemical-based plastics.<\/p>\n<p>French developed a proprietary formulation for the new material, which incorporates an algae-derived polymer and locally milled pigments.<\/p>\n<p>It aims to offer a sustainable alternative to conventional petrochemical surfaces such as acrylic, vinyl and resin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239904 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/aesop-hainan-china-store-algae-materials-interiors_dezeen_1704_col_9-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Aesop Hainan store interiors\" width=\"1704\" height=\"2272\"  \/>Amber lighting illuminates the back shelves throughout the store<\/p>\n<p>The semi-transparent algal surface adds to the slight mirroring of the illuminated aluminium panels, which cast flickering reflections onto the walls and floor throughout the store.<\/p>\n<p>According to French, the algae-based bioplastics manage to preserve the organic matter of the natural algae while maintaining its biodegradability.<\/p>\n<p>It adheres to smooth substrates without adhesives, enabling it to be removed intact for repositioning or to be melted and reshaped into new forms for reuse.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239903 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/aesop-hainan-china-store-algae-materials-interiors_dezeen_1704_col_8-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Aesop Hainan store interiors\" width=\"1704\" height=\"2272\"  \/>The algae-based surface was developed by Jessie French<\/p>\n<p>A four-metre-tall circular pillar at the front of Aesop Hainan was also covered with the same material, in a pattern that resembles the movement of ocean waves.<\/p>\n<p>The sealed finish was designed for permanent use and cast directly onto the pillar, then fixed with an organic sealant.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/06\/05\/madrid-aesop-store-las-salesas-ciszak-dalmas-matteo-ferrari\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/madrid-aesop-las-salesas-ciszak-dalmas-matteo-ferrari_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Aesop Las Salesas in Madrid by Ciszak Dalmas and Matteo Ferrari\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Aesop arranges Madrid store around four rediscovered cast iron columns\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The rapidly changing nature of retail interiors easily generates a large amount of excess material and landfill waste, which also becomes a crucial expression of brands&#8217; philosophy,&#8221; said French.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Balancing design language and environmental responsibility requires designers to consider the impact of each design material throughout its entire life cycle on the environment and public health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239908 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/aesop-hainan-china-store-algae-materials-interiors_dezeen_1704_col_13-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Aesop Hainan store interiors\" width=\"1704\" height=\"1136\"  \/>The larger lighting installation at the centre of the store comprises 2,000 aluminium panels<\/p>\n<p>Display shelves and seating areas in the store are arranged around the central table and along the curved perimeter of the space, which is lit up by amber light.<\/p>\n<p>Further inside the store, a personalisation room for bespoke customer service holds two basins facing each other with a long built-in-bench placed in between.<\/p>\n<p>Round mirrors above the basins, framed in gold paint, echo the two oculi in the main room.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239899 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/aesop-hainan-china-store-algae-materials-interiors_dezeen_1704_col_4-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Aesop Hainan store interiors\" width=\"1704\" height=\"1136\"  \/>Round mirrors in the personalisation room echo the two ceiling oculi<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We aim to engage all senses of our customers.
