{"id":285771,"date":"2026-01-15T13:04:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T13:04:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/285771\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T13:04:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T13:04:07","slug":"dublin-data-centre-uses-as-much-power-as-200000-homes-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/285771\/","title":{"rendered":"Dublin data centre uses as much power as 200,000 homes \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/data-centres\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/data-centres\/\">data centre<\/a> in west <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> consumes 10 times the electricity of a nearby pharmaceutical plant employing 2,000 people, equivalent to enough power for 200,000 homes, according to an internal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/government\/\">Government<\/a> document. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The paper, released to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\">Sinn F\u00e9in<\/a> MEP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lynn-boylan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/lynn-boylan\/\">Lynn Boylan<\/a> after a freedom-of-information request, shows the pharma plant requires 10 megawatts of power \u201cand provides 2,000 jobs\u201d, while the data centre has a \u201csmaller people footprint but a power requirement 10 times greater, the equivalent of circa 200,000 homes\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Castlebaggot 220kV substation was intended to relieve pressure on the grid and support housing and industrial growth, but officials noted the \u201csheer volume and energy density\u201d of data centres in the area \u201ccompletely consumed the capacity of the new reinforcement\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-climate-energy-and-the-environment\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-climate-energy-and-the-environment\/\">Department of Energy<\/a> has said a repeat of the scenario in west Dublin is now effectively ruled out, but the document shows the new substation had no capacity left to support \u201cmajor housing expansion\u201d or other enterprises in the area. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The impact of data centres at the substation has come to light before. Last year the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/commission-for-regulation-of-utilities\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/commission-for-regulation-of-utilities\/\">Commission for the Regulation of Utilities<\/a> (CRU) said the substation\u2019s capacity was \u201calmost entirely used by data centres applications\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Boylan said the document also highlights the impact of building more data centres outside Dublin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/01\/13\/eu-regulations-on-ai-and-plans-for-limited-data-centre-development-to-go-to-cabinet\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EU regulations on AI and plans for limited data centre development to go to CabinetOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Requests to connect data centres in these regions would \u201cvery likely create a constrained region wherever they seek to connect\u201d, the paper states, impacting the ability to connect housing, enterprise or projects focused on electrification of heat and transport. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Boylan said focusing on regional development of the facilities would be \u201cmoving the problem around the country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat\u2019s not balanced regional development, instead it\u2019s sacrificing the power that regional communities need to grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A Department of Energy spokesman said the scenario in the paper arose due to a \u201chistorically high concentration\u201d of data-centre applications, but that under more recent CRU decisions, constrained electricity capacity must be considered as a criterion when assessing data-centre connections. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said this \u201ceffectively rules out the type of scenario presented in that specific historic case study arising at present\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Cabinet this week approved the Large Energy User Action Plan (Leap), which \u201cwill ensure that capacity and network expansion planning for data centre growth will be developed via regional green energy parks rather than in areas of high urban growth,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A spokesman for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eirgrid\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eirgrid\/\">EirGrid<\/a>, which connects large users to the transmission system, said its policy is governed by the CRU and that, since 2021, data-centre requests have been reviewed while factoring in constraints in high-demand areas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said a new engagement and connection process for data-centre connections would be published by the end of March. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOnce published, potential new applicants will be provided with the appropriate guidance required to advance new possible data centre connection applications.\u201d He said EirGrid was required to offer connections to all parties and without prioritisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">EirGrid said it would be delivering \u201cunprecedented\u201d amounts of new infrastructure in the years ahead to meet increasing demand, including in housing, climate and industry.
