To do this, the program uses <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/copernicus-program\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/copernicus-program\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sentinel satellites<\/a>, which zip around Earth, capturing various breathtaking, and heartbreaking, views from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5ec28b19-106d-46ec-97fc-1e5680d2aeaa\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What is it?<a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"b70aae2c-ee29-4a78-8d59-5773d52cde6e-0\">Sentinel-2 consists of a trio (or &#8220;constellation&#8221;) of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.copernicus.eu\/en\/about-copernicus\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.copernicus.eu\/en\/about-copernicus\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Earth-observation satellites<\/a>, each carrying a high-resolution multi-spectral camera that records reflected light in 13 spectral bands. Those bands include visible wavelengths (what we can see) but also near-infrared and short-wave infrared, which are especially helpful for measuring vegetation condition, soil and moisture difference and fire impacts.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 9, 2026, a Sentinel-2 satellite captured a devastating scene of the bushfires in Australia, seeing dark burn scars where the fire had already burned through the landscape.
