{"id":287297,"date":"2026-01-16T09:32:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T09:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/287297\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T09:32:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T09:32:07","slug":"ireland-losing-billions-of-euro-in-foreign-investment-due-to-energy-grid-constraints-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/287297\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland \u2018losing billions of euro in foreign investment\u2019 due to energy grid constraints \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland has lost of billions of euro in new jobs projects because global companies cannot access electricity and infrastructure, a top Government adviser has said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sean-o-driscoll\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sean-o-driscoll\/\">Sean O\u2019Driscoll<\/a>, of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/12\/02\/large-extensions-to-critical-infrastructure-should-be-exempted-from-seeking-planning-cabinet-to-hear\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/12\/02\/large-extensions-to-critical-infrastructure-should-be-exempted-from-seeking-planning-cabinet-to-hear\/\">Accelerating Infrastructure Taskforce<\/a>, said the Irish foreign direct investment (FDI) market was suffering serious fallout from the lack of new electricity generation and infrastructure to distribute power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have been playing Russian roulette with our economy when it comes to energy and infrastructure in general. At least, we\u2019re talking about it now,\u201d said Mr O\u2019Driscoll, who was chief executive of electrical goods firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/glen-dimplex\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/glen-dimplex\/\">Glen Dimplex<\/a> and is chairman of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/economic-social-research-institute-esri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/economic-social-research-institute-esri\/\">Economic &amp; Social Research Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Crisis was narrowly averted three years ago this winter when surging demand came close to outpacing supply, he said. \u201cWe were within a whisker of running out of generation capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was speaking to The Irish Times after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ida-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ida-ireland\/\">IDA Ireland<\/a> released internal papers in which the agency\u2019s board was told \u201celectricity grid connections are not available for new energy-intensive FDI projects\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The documents, partly released under the Freedom of Information Act, were submitted to Government last February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At that time, IDA officials found the level and delivery of energy investment was \u201cnot providing certainty or confidence to FDI\u201d and said large energy users such as data centres were \u201cnot considering Ireland as a viable location\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Despite such challenges, IDA Ireland went on to deliver record FDI in last year, with 323 new projects linked to more than 15,000 jobs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Asked about board papers, the agency acknowledged Ireland \u201cmust accelerate\u201d infrastructure delivery, but said Government plans for a multibillion euro energy investment had improved the outlook. \u201cAs we enter 2026, Ireland benefits from a fundamentally improved policy landscape,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/housing-planning\/2025\/12\/03\/promises-were-made-before-about-clearing-blocks-to-big-projects-whats-different-this-time\/\">Promises were made before about clearing blocks to big projects \u2013 what\u2019s different this time?<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr O\u2019Driscoll, expressing confidence himself in Government measures to boost power generation and transmission, said the lack of electricity was a problem that had worsened for 10 or 15 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cNobody was encouraged to talk about this,\u201d he said in an interview. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn fact, people were discouraged to talk about it because you were seen to be negative about Ireland, talking down Ireland and talking down our FDI opportunities. The system was in complete denial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Public Expenditure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jack-chambers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jack-chambers\/\">Jack Chambers<\/a> appointed the taskforce last May, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/01\/government-seeks-emergency-planning-powers-to-speed-up-infrastructure-delivery\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/01\/government-seeks-emergency-planning-powers-to-speed-up-infrastructure-delivery\/\">seeking an action plan<\/a> for removing barriers to water, transport and electricity infrastructure. The aim is to support housing and enterprise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The plan, published last month, includes legal reforms and measures to streamline decision-making.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr O\u2019Driscoll, who remains with the taskforce as it monitors the execution of the plan, said multinational investors approached him directly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDuring the consultation process on infrastructure, several of the most significant foreign direct investors in Ireland made contact with me to share their concerns with me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI can tell you what they said to me. We have [lost] \u2013 and are continuing to lose \u2013 billions of euro of investment to other sister companies of those multinationals in Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSo something that naturally had come Ireland\u2019s way previously, for the last \u2013 I would say \u2013 two to three years, some of that has been going to other European countries as a consequence of our infrastructure issues. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat\u2019s how serious it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He welcomed new State money for national grid operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eirgrid\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eirgrid\/\">EirGrid<\/a> and for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/esb-networks\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/esb-networks\/\">ESB Networks<\/a>, saying the reversal of \u201chistorical underinvestment\u201d gave them strength to tap bond markets for big investments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBoth organisations have told us, the taskforce, that they are now satisfied that they have got the investment that\u2019s required and they have the plans to enable them to start to address these issues.
