{"id":287735,"date":"2026-01-16T15:34:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T15:34:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/287735\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T15:34:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T15:34:08","slug":"norway-reacts-to-venezuelan-opposition-leader-giving-nobel-peace-medal-to-trump-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/287735\/","title":{"rendered":"Norway reacts to Venezuelan opposition leader giving Nobel peace medal to Trump \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/norway\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/norway\/\">Norway<\/a> reacted with disbelief to the news that Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mar\u00eda Corina Machado gave her award medal to US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>, who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2026\/01\/15\/us-senate-votes-against-resolution-that-would-have-prevented-further-trump-action-in-venezuela\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2026\/01\/15\/us-senate-votes-against-resolution-that-would-have-prevented-further-trump-action-in-venezuela\/\">long coveted the award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat\u2019s completely unheard of,\u201d Janne Haaland Matlary, a professor with the University of Oslo and a former politician, told public broadcaster NRK. \u201cIt\u2019s a total lack of respect for the award, on her part,\u201d she said, calling the act \u201cmeaningless\u201d and \u201cpathetic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Trump, who claims to deserve the peace prize for having resolved numerous wars during his second term, accepted the medal from the Venezuelan opposition leader at a White House meeting on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He has earlier expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The award cannot be shared or transferred, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said in a statement last week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2026\/01\/15\/us-senate-votes-against-resolution-that-would-have-prevented-further-trump-action-in-venezuela\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump praises Venezuela\u2019s Machado for giving him her Nobel medalOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While Mr Trump expressed gratitude to have been presented the medal he has long pined for, the Nobel Peace Centre has reiterated its rules of possession several times in recent days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe decision is final and stands for all time,\u201d Nobel organisers said in a statement last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Thursday, Nobel organisers posted again on X: \u201cA medal can change owners, but the title of a Nobel peace prize laureate cannot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It did not respond to phone calls and text messages seeking comment on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Machado has been shut out of Venezuela\u2019s leadership transition since US forces ousted Nicol\u00e1s Maduro on January 3rd but kept his regime in place. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Machado gave Trump the medal as \u201ca recognition of his unique commitment with our freedom,\u201d she said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The peace prize is arguably the world\u2019s most prestigious award for diplomatic efforts.
