Hilary Duff<\/strong> released her new song, \u201cRoommates,\u201d as well as its music video on Thursday, and the track turned heads for its explicit lyrics about sex, frustration, and feeling ignored in a relationship. In the song, Duff<\/a> describes a romance that used to feel exciting. Then, she shifts into something that sounds like two people sharing space, even singing about touching herself and \u201clooking at porn\u201d because her partner no longer pays attention to her.<\/p>\n

Hilary Duff framed the song as something bigger than just shock value. In a press release (via Us Weekly<\/a>), she described \u201cRoommates\u201d as \u201ca song about when life is life-ing, babe,\u201d adding that it taps into \u201cthat ache for a wilder, freer time \u2014 before the days were swallowed by carpools, budget talks, grocery runs and letting old or new insecurities slip in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Besides, the timing stands out. Duff teased \u201cRoommates\u201d earlier this month on Instagram, right as netizens speculated about her involvement in the \u201ctoxic mom group\u201d story<\/a> that Ashley Tisdale recently sparked in her viral essay for The Cut. While Tisdale\u2019s rep denied the essay involved Duff, the latter\u2019s husband, musician Matthew Koma, fueled conversation when he posted a parody tied to the drama.<\/p>\n

Koma did not just comment from the sidelines, either. Us Weekly noted that he co-wrote \u201cRoommates,\u201d along with his wife\u2019s previous single \u201cMature.\u201d Duff and Koma married in 2019 and share three daughters, namely Banks, Mae, and Townes. Additionally, the Disney<\/a> alum shares her son Luca with ex-husband Mike Comrie.<\/p>\n

The new song, \u201cRoommates,\u201d arrives ahead of Duff<\/a>\u2019s upcoming album, \u201cLuck \u2026 or Something,\u201d due out February 20, marking her first album in more than a decade, following 2015\u2019s \u201cBreathe In. Breathe Out.\u201d Fans who grew up with Duff\u2019s Disney-era image see the message clearly: this new chapter comes with mature lyrics, real-life mess, candor, and no interest in playing it cute anymore.<\/p>\n
