{"id":288411,"date":"2026-01-17T00:36:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T00:36:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/288411\/"},"modified":"2026-01-17T00:36:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T00:36:14","slug":"kerry-td-offers-sincere-apology-for-driving-in-excess-of-190km-h","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/288411\/","title":{"rendered":"Kerry TD offers &#8216;sincere apology&#8217; for driving in excess of 190km\/h"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fianna F\u00e1il TD <strong>Michael Cahill<\/strong> has offered a &#8220;sincere and unreserved&#8221; apology for driving at an unacceptable speed on the M8 in County Cork.<\/p>\n<p>It happened between <strong>Mitchelstown<\/strong> and Fermoy last year, where he was driving at speeds &#8220;in excess of <strong>190km\/h<\/strong> and very close to 200km\/h.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Friday, Deputy Cahill says that at the time, he was travelling from Leinster House to a meeting at St Mary of the Angels in St Francis&#8217; Special School in Beaufort, Co Kerry, when he was stopped by a garda.<\/p>\n<p>He said he is very sorry, and there is no excuse for his actions, before adding, &#8220;I am acutely aware of the number of serious and fatal accidents on our roads, the devastating impact these tragedies have on families and the fact that excessive speed is a major contributory factor.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Cahill said he will not appeal the conviction and will step back as a member of the Joint Oireachtas Justice Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The Taoiseach, Miche\u00e1l Martin said he was\u00a0informed that Deputy Michael Cahill was convicted in the District Court for dangerous driving.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"not-prose no-underline\" data-action=\"click\" data-category=\"Read more article clicked\" data-label=\"https:\/\/www.breakingnews.ie\/ireland\/man-26-jailed-for-vicious-and-sustained-attack-on-man-in-dublin-city-centre-1854017.html\" data-value=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breakingnews.ie\/ireland\/man-26-jailed-for-vicious-and-sustained-attack-on-man-in-dublin-city-centre-1854017.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>        <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-457306354-e1682341117964.jpg\" class=\"rounded-sm object-contain bg-transparent z-10 w-full h-full not-prose\" alt=\"Man (26) Jailed For 'Vicious And Sustained' Attack On Man In Dublin City Centre\" width=\"278\" height=\"156\" \/><\/p>\n<p>        Ireland<\/p>\n<p>Man (26) jailed for &#8216;vicious and sustained&#8217; attack on man in Dublin city centre<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a statement, he said, &#8220;I have spoken to Deputy Cahill. This incident, which took place last year, was completely and utterly unacceptable. He accepts this and apologises.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He has rightly received his punishment in the courts, a decision he fully accepts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As legislators, D\u00e1il deputies have a particular responsibility to set the right example, and Deputy Cahill has accepted that this incident let down both his family and the wider community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He has also decided to step down from the Justice Committee.
