Here are some of the main talking points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Claire Byrne has told her former employer RT\u00c9 to \u201cbring it on\u201d as she prepares to start a new show on rival station Newstalk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The presenter, who  <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/arid-41696030.html\">revealed last summer that she was leaving her titular show on RT\u00c9 Radio One<\/a>\u00a0to launch a new mid-morning programme on Newstalk, made the fighting remarks on Friday night\u2019s  Late Late Show.\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">As the first guest of the night, the conversation quickly turned to pay and listener numbers following some jibes from host Patrick Kielty about whether \u201cthe keycard still worked\u201d at Donnybrook studios.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Asked about her decision to leave the state broadcaster, the mother of three said age played a major role.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI turned 50 last summer, and it does make you think about where you\u2019re going and what you\u2019re doing,\u201d she said. \u201cAre you a bit too comfy in your seat?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Laois woman added that after three to five years in any role, she feels an urge to \u201cmove, move, move\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:540px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"data-instgrm-captioned\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DTlm0JKjT4j\/?utm_source=ig_embed\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\"\/>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cSo Newstalk came along and said, \u2018We have huge ambition. We want to grow the audience.\u2019 Initially, I thought, \u2018I\u2019m grand where I am, thank you very much.\u2019 Then I thought, why am I not going to meet this challenge? They think I can do it, why don\u2019t I think I have the appetite for it? So I said, \u2018Give it a go. Let\u2019s do it.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Asked whether the offer was one she \u201ccouldn\u2019t refuse\u201d, Byrne responded: \u201cI suppose it was, but if I had stayed, I would have been very well paid, and I think people know that. I\u2019ve been very honest about what I was earning at RT\u00c9.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Byrne  <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/arid-41170453.html\">voluntarily disclosed her salary<\/a> to listeners during her Radio One show during the RT\u00c9 payment scandal in the summer of 2013. At the time, she was one of the state broadcasters top paid presenters on a salary of \u20ac280,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Pushed by Kielty on whether she would have had to take a pay cut if she had retained her position in RT\u00c9, she confirmed she would have.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;Let&#8217;s not make any bones about it, that certainly was a factor. But I wasn&#8217;t going to starve if I stayed here. I was very happy here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;However, did I want to try and stretch my chops a bit? Did I want to try and push on and do something different? Yes, I always do. Not many people remember that \u2014 myself, Miriam [O\u2019Callaghan] and Pat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt is intimidating taking over his slot, but it will be a whole new show and I\u2019m really excited to get going.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">When asked whether she thought her former employers were \u201cworried\u201d ahead of her Newstalk gig, given a big shuffle of the Radio One schedule following her departure, Byrne laughed and said, &#8220;Because of me? Oh, I don\u2019t know&#8230; but I am up for the fight.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe right answer is to say the pie is big enough for all of us,\u201d she said. \u201cBut you know what? I\u2019m going to Newstalk to grow the audience \u2014 so bring it on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;They put David there and Oliver [Callan], so I have got to beat the two of them. I love it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Byrne also shared that she &#8220;nearly ran over&#8221; her new rival David McCullough during the week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI was trying to reverse into a car parking space. I was talking to somebody from  the Late Late Show, hands-free!, and I did a swear word, and I said &#8216;I almost killed David McCullough\u2019. We&#8217;re walking to work in the morning, that\u2019s pretty romantic. I feel very blessed. I really do. I feel very blessed to be working with him. I think he&#8217;s a brilliant actor, so that&#8217;s an honor in itself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The actress said her American husband has also been settling into their new life at home in Monaghan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;He speaks the language now. He understands everything. He&#8217;s sort of got his head around the constant Irish thing of just popping in, people just land, how long are they staying? You never know. Is it a week? Three minutes? I&#8217;ve said it before, but a rising tide lifts all boats. And I just think it&#8217;s great to see the talent that I think we&#8217;ve always had on such an international platform.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Amybeth McNulty on the importance of queer representation on screen<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Amybeth McNulty, the Donegal actress who plays Vickie in  Stranger Things, also made a trip from the Upside Down to Donnybrook on Friday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The 24-year-old joined the cast in season four, where she entered as Robyn\u2019s (Maya Hawke) love interest. The bisexual actress said queer representation on screen is \u201ceverything\u201d to her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;I grew up as a queer kid in Donegal, and I came out online when I was 16\/17. And I think especially when the queer storyline is a part of their chapter whilst they&#8217;re dealing with monsters, and you&#8217;re in the 80s and there&#8217;s all these other things going on, it doesn&#8217;t have to be about that.
