Picture Chani Anderson<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">In March of last year, the Department of Housing, Local Government, and Heritage announced an investment of \u20ac250,000 for Shandon under the Historic Structures Fund (HSF), and that was followed in April by an allocation of \u20ac130,000 under the Government\u2019s Community Monuments Fund (CMF).<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">When the scaffolding, surrounded by an eye-catching white plastic wrap, went up around the clock tower in July, it was announced that works would only cover the refurbishment of the support beams, the clock-face windows, and the clock mechanism itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">However, before Christmas, the decision was taken to leave the scaffolding in place a while longer so further remedial work, including the cleaning of the tower\u2019s famous red sandstone and limestone walls, could be completed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4933322_1_articleinlinemobile_25-21_1_.jpeg\" alt=\"Architect Peter Bourke, Reverend Meghan Farr and Hearthstone MD Keith Starr stand before the scaffolding that now enshrouds Shandon Bell Tower, where Cork\u2019s iconic \u201cfour-faced liar\u201d clocks were removed for the first time in decades in October 25. Picture Chani Anderson<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Lord Mayor Fergal Dennehy,said it was \u201cvery prudent\u201d to carry out those additional works while the scaffolding was already in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cFrom a practical point of view, the cost of scaffolding is quite expensive, so it would be pointless deciding in a year or two to do the remedial work that\u2019s being done now and face that additional cost,\u201d Mr Dennehy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cThe whole Shandon St area is under regeneration at the moment.
