This is the biggest change to Android\u2019s fundamentals in years. Google is clamping down<\/a> on sideloading \u2014 the feature that more than any other differentiates Android<\/a> from iPhone. And now we have an early revelation as to what users can expect.<\/p>\n “Changes are coming to how Android users install apps outside the safety and protection of the Play Store,” Android Authority<\/a> says. This follows Google confirming<\/a> that app developers will need to be verified before their apps can be sideloaded.<\/p>\n ForbesMicrosoft Confirms First Free Windows Update For 2026By Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n Such was the backlash, with Android\u2019s power-user community complaining<\/a> that this made Android just like iPhone, that Google u-turned. At least to some extent. If you\u2019re an experienced user, whatever that means in practice, your freedoms will remain.<\/p>\n This \u201cadvanced installation flow,\u201d Android Authority says, \u201csupports even unverified apps. And as we wait to see exactly how that\u2019s going to work, we\u2019re starting to spot some early pieces of it. At least, we\u2019re definitely identifying text strings recently added to Google Play.\u201d But what\u2019s actually been seen will raise more questions than answers. <\/p>\n Primarily, this is a dialog box with \u201can option for moving forward with installation despite the lack of developer verification. Now, without being able to go through this new install workflow just yet, we may be getting ahead of ourselves, but at least based on these few strings, we have to say \u2014 this doesn\u2019t feel particularly robust?\u201d<\/p>\n That\u2019s because there\u2019s a warning, but it\u2019s too easily ignored. It\u2019s also broadly the same type of warning that Samsung, Pixel and other phone users already ignore.<\/p>\n
