{"id":28950,"date":"2025-08-28T15:32:23","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T15:32:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/28950\/"},"modified":"2025-08-28T15:32:23","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T15:32:23","slug":"doge-put-americans-social-security-records-at-risk-whistleblower-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/28950\/","title":{"rendered":"DOGE put Americans\u2019 Social Security records at risk, whistleblower says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Department of Government Efficiency employees at the Social Security Administration put the records of more than 300 million Americans at risk by creating a copy of the data in a vulnerable cloud computing server, the agency\u2019s chief data officer said in a whistleblower complaint filed Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The copy of the agency\u2019s database \u2013 which contains people\u2019s names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, citizenship status, parents\u2019 names and other personal information \u2013 \u201capparently lacks any security oversight from SSA or tracking to determine who is accessing or has accessed the copy of this data,\u201d according to Charles Borges, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/whistleblower.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/08-26-2025-Borges-Disclosure-Sanitized.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:whistleblower disclosure;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">whistleblower disclosure<\/a> was submitted by the Government Accountability Project to the Office of Special Counsel and congressional committees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cShould bad actors gain access to this cloud environment, Americans may be susceptible to widespread identity theft, may lose vital healthcare and food benefits, and the government may be responsible for re-issuing every American a new Social Security Number at great cost,\u201d according to the complaint, which was first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/26\/us\/politics\/doge-social-security-data.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reported;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reported<\/a> by the New York Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Borges reported his concerns \u2013 \u201ca disturbing pattern of questionable and risky security access and administrative misconduct\u201d \u2013 to the office of the agency\u2019s chief information officer but is not aware of any remedial action being taken, the complaint said. He has served as Social Security\u2019s chief data officer since January 27.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Maintaining the privacy and security of people\u2019s personal information has been a major concern since the Trump administration allowed Elon Musk\u2019s DOGE team to embed in multiple federal agencies, including Social Security. Former officials have raised red flags about DOGE\u2019s need to access and handling of the records.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A coalition of labor and advocacy groups sued to stop DOGE from gaining access to people\u2019s Social Security records, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/06\/politics\/supreme-court-restores-doges-access-to-sensitive-social-security-data?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Supreme Court;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Supreme Court<\/a> in June allowed DOGE to review the data in its stated effort to root out fraud and modernize the agency\u2019s technology. Musk had repeatedly raised the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/13\/politics\/elon-musk-social-security-conspiracy-theory-what-matters?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:specter of fraud;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">specter of fraud<\/a> within the agency, noting that it had impossibly old people in its files, for instance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Social Security Administration said Tuesday it takes all whistleblower complaints seriously and noted that it stores all personal data in secure environments with robust safeguards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe data referenced in the complaint is stored in a long-standing environment used by SSA and walled off from the internet,\u201d Nick Perrine, an agency spokesperson, said in a statement. \u201cHigh-level career SSA officials have administrative access to this system with oversight by SSA\u2019s Information Security team.
