{"id":29039,"date":"2025-08-28T16:25:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T16:25:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/29039\/"},"modified":"2025-08-28T16:25:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T16:25:15","slug":"priest-criticises-tuam-excavation-describing-nuns-who-ran-mother-and-baby-home-as-outstanding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/29039\/","title":{"rendered":"Priest criticises Tuam excavation describing nuns who ran mother and baby home as &#8216;outstanding&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A priest and former diocesan secretary of Tuam has criticised the excavation of remains underway at the former mother and baby home in the town, describing the nuns who ran the institution as \u201coutstanding\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Excavation <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/news\/arid-41668925.html\">works began last month<\/a> with the aim of recovering and forensically analysing the remains of nearly 800 infants buried at the site, many of whom are believed to have been interred in a disused septic tank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A special body has been established by the Government to oversee the project and ensure that the recovered human remains are memorialised and buried with respect and dignity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Fr Brendan Kilcoyne, who served as secretary to the Archbishop of Tuam for over a decade, said \u201ca fortune of money\u201d was being spent on the excavation works despite the completion of a \u201cfirst-class\u201d government inquiry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He said the works would take two years, during which time a \u201cblack mass\u201d would take place in Tuam, peddling \u201cblack propaganda\u201d about the history of the home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Fr Kilcoyne said there was an \u201coutrageous myth\u201d that children at the institution had \u201cmet an untimely end through bad action\u201d. He described the nuns who ran the home as \u201coutstanding\u201d, and said he did not believe there was any \u201cbad action\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe are now about to spend two years and a fortune of money excavating every single piece of human remains in an area where it was always known human remains were buried,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            We are going to have this liturgy.
