Rising NFL star Charlie Smyth was called an ‘absolute inspiration’ after his appearance <\/a>on Friday’s Late Late Show<\/a> by viewers.<\/p>\n

The former Down GAA<\/a> star made his first regular-season start against the Miami Dolphins in November. He then featured in the New Orleans Saints’ last six regular-season games, as they finished with a losing 6-11 record in the NFC South.<\/p>\n

Smyth told host Patrick Kielty<\/a> how challenging things were before his breakthrough, as he feared he might never get a chance.<\/p>\n

“The last few months, especially before I got playing, they were challenging \u2013 not knowing if your chance would ever come,” he said.<\/p>\n

“But then, when you get the chance… there’s a deeper meaning to what you’re doing. You can think of all your controllable thoughts, but then you think of who you’re representing.<\/p>\n

“You’re getting to represent the people of Mayobridge, your family, the Smyth name, the people of Down who have been unbelievably supportive, and Ireland.<\/p>\n

“I took that down in my notes before every game.”<\/p>\n

Smyth told of the huge difference in resources available at the Miami Dolphins compared to what he was used to playing Gaelic football.<\/p>\n

He explained, “I’m not going to sit here and diss Mayobridge. We have three great fields in Mayobridge, but it’s next level.<\/p>\n

“One of the machines in our training room costs $60,000, just to do electromagnetic pulses on your leg. That’s just one example.<\/p>\n

“There is so much money and resources pumped in that you can never imagine being pumped into football at home, and it’s just an unbelievable set-up.”<\/p>\n

Many people took to social media to wish the 24-year-old all the best for the future following the interview, reports the Irish Mirror.<\/a><\/p>\n

“What an absolute inspiration Charlie Smyth is,” one person wrote.<\/p>\n

Another comment read: “Charlie Smyth. You couldn’t but wish him nothing but success. He’s chuffed with himself and why wouldn’t he be. What a gent. An D\u00fan Ab\u00fa!”<\/p>\n

Someone else said: “This young lad Charlie Smyth is very articulate. He could do very well in the States financially if he keeps performing, he is very marketable.”<\/p>\n

One other person commented: “Congratulations Charlie. You are such an inspiration. Keep up your amazing work.”<\/p>\n
