{"id":290562,"date":"2026-01-18T08:11:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-18T08:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/290562\/"},"modified":"2026-01-18T08:11:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-18T08:11:08","slug":"i-use-chatgpt-like-a-lifecoach-it-has-helped-me-avoid-a-lot-of-arguments-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/290562\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018I use ChatGPT like a lifecoach &#8230; It has helped me avoid a lot of arguments\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">When Claudia Zedda decided she wanted to run a half marathon, she turned to artificial intelligence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She asked the AI bot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/chatgpt\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/chatgpt\/\">ChatGPT<\/a> to create a plan for her 21km run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI didn\u2019t have a running coach. I didn\u2019t have running background,\u201d says the Sardinian living in Cork.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI was very specific. I said: \u2018I\u2019m a complete beginner. Never ran in my life. I usually do weightlifting three or four times a week, and I want to stick to it, but I have a half marathon in six months. Can you create an achievable plan for me based on my goals?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The detailed plan laid out by the bot, powered by large language model (LLM), worked for the 26-year-old; she has since completed two half marathons, shaving 15 minutes off her personal best in Galway last October. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Zedda is one of the estimated 150-200 million daily users of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/open-ai\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/open-ai\/\">ChatGPT<\/a>, which handles more than a billion queries each day. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is now the fifth most visited website in the world after Google, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, according to web analytics firm Similiarweb. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Zedda says she uses ChatGPT to help her \u201cclarify\u201d her ideas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhen you\u2019re a very busy person and you have all these goals, you put a lot of pressure on yourself so sometimes using ChatGPT helps me clarify my ideas,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI bounce them off a tool that I know is able to summarise what I\u2019m thinking and show me which fears are blocking me from achieving my goals\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She sees the technology as empowering and, if used correctly, as helping individuals \u201cachieve things that you would never have thought possible\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sometimes, Zedda uses specific prompts so that the chatbot uses a professional tone, asking ChatGPT to speak to her \u201cas a cognitive psychologist\u201d would. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Other times she asks for it simply \u201cto be nice\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI find it very helpful if there\u2019s something that upsets me. Let\u2019s say I get a message that I don\u2019t like and I feel a bit triggered,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBefore I text back, I explain to ChatGPT how I\u2019m feeling and how this message is triggering me, and I paste the answer that I was going to write down and I ask: \u2018Does this feel reasonable?\u2019 It helps me balance my answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The AI bot has helped her \u201cavoid a lot of arguments\u201d, she adds, laughing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Although Zedda finds it useful, she says that she would not rely on it as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mental-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mental-health\/\">mental health<\/a> support, seeing it more as a \u201clife coach\u201d than a therapist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI went to therapy so I know what benefits a therapist can give me, and I know how important a therapist is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Claudia Zedda\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SGU5MFQOC5EMJCOSBGDQJD7NSY.jpeg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"1066\"\/>Claudia Zedda <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Others use chatbots differently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Their use as a replacement for therapists due to their accessibility is of increasing concern among mental health professionals in Ireland and abroad. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the US, Maria and Matthew Raine have taken a lawsuit against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/openai\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/openai\/\">OpenAI<\/a>, the owner of ChatGPT, and its chief executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sam-altman\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sam-altman\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sam Altman<\/a>, alleging that the bot contributed to the suicide of their 16 year-old-son Adam. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the legal action, the family included chat logs between Adam and ChatGPT in which he detailed his suicide thoughts. The couple argue that the chatbot validated his \u201cmost harmful and self-destructive thoughts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nicola Byrne, chief executive of mental health charity Shine, says that in Ireland \u201cit would be unrealistic to ignore the fact that people are already using these tools in their daily lives, including in relation to mental health\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAny responsible discussion about AI and mental health must be clear that these tools are not clinicians\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She adds that we \u201cmust not allow technology to quietly replace properly resourced, human-led services\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAI tools, including large language models, are not healthcare and must never be positioned or used as a substitute for professional mental healthcare, clinical assessment or human support,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She points to the difference between what she describes as \u201clow-risk, practical uses\u201d and \u201cuses that are clinically inappropriate or potentially harmful\u201d and says that \u201cused cautiously, and with a clear understanding of the limits of these tools, [ChatGPT] sits closer to information-seeking or self-management than treatment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Examples of what she considers to be appropriate uses are \u201corganising routines, setting medication reminders, journaling or asking general questions after receiving a diagnosis from a qualified professional\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have serious concerns about AI being used as a form of emotional support, therapy or meaning-making around symptoms. The risks are particularly acute for people living with psychosis or severe mental illness,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The acute risks posed to those living with psychosis are because \u201cthese systems cannot reality-test, exercise clinical judgment or safely challenge beliefs, and they can inadvertently reinforce distress or delusional thinking,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat is not a theoretical risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Byrne says she is aware that \u201cpeople often turn to AI because it is accessible and non-judgmental, especially when services are stretched\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat reflects gaps in care, not the suitability of the technology,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The increased use of ChatGPT comes against the backdrop of the chatbot\u2019s owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/01\/10\/fewer-irish-people-using-chatgpt-than-in-other-countries-openai-told-taoiseach\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/01\/10\/fewer-irish-people-using-chatgpt-than-in-other-countries-openai-told-taoiseach\/\">attempts to sell its virtues to the Government and encouraging greater use of its technology<\/a> in a country where, it claimed, usage was lower than elsewhere. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a meeting at Government Buildings last May, Sarah Friar, OpenAI\u2019s chief financial officer, told Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin about developments in AI technologies in recent years and according to a note of the meeting: \u201cThere was a discussion on the opportunities and potential use-cases of generative Al, including in healthcare and education\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/11\/13\/chatgpt-strikes-a-sour-note-with-german-musicians\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ChatGPT strikes a sour note with German musiciansOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">During the meeting, details of which were disclosed under the Freedom of Information Act, Friar told Martin that ChatGPT use is lower in Ireland, noting that \u201c28 per cent of the population in Ireland is using ChatGPT weekly, compared to 50 per cent in the best countries\u201d, according to a note of the meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/technology\/2025\/11\/13\/how-ai-and-social-media-contribute-to-brain-rot\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How AI and social media contribute to \u2018brain rot\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p>The increased personal use of ChatGPT<b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Brendan Kelly, professor of psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin, says that people will turn to AI bots if \u201cthere are service delays or deficiencies\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The consultant psychiatrist says the increased use of ChatGPT for therapeutic reasons is a \u201ca wake-up call for services \u2013 health services, social services and mental health services \u2013 to provide better and proper information in a very clear and responsive way\u201d. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Prof Brendan Kelly says people will use ChatGPT and other LLMs when other services are delayed or deficient. Photograph: Nick Bradshaw<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe, as in the services, need to get better and prompter at responding to people with proper information, or else they will turn to less reliable sources,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAI is very good at routine tasks, organisational tasks and rote tasks. There\u2019s no harm in using it for that,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2025\/12\/15\/the-chatbot-will-see-you-now-is-this-the-future-of-irish-medicine\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The chatbot will see you now: is this the future of Irish medicine?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe problem is when the LLM starts to seduce you with its apparent certainty about the world, its reliability, its responsiveness and interest by tacking on a question at the end of an answer, asking: \u2018Do you want more?\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He warns people against developing a relationship with ChatGPT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cA relationship with a LLM might be seductive on the surface, but it is ultimately profoundly unsatisfactory because it has no personality of its own,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cLLMs are psychologically powerful if we let them be,\u201d the psychiatrist says, \u201cbut they are also formulaic and ultimately, they\u2019re empty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt is always necessary that the user has more knowledge than the LLM and can critically appraise what comes out,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kelly believes there is \u201cno amount of legislation or regulation that will make an AI therapy sufficiently responsible\u201d, but he does believe there are regulations that can mitigate risks for vulnerable users. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe can make it a requirement for AI models that offer anything approaching therapy to have in place not just guardrails, but very assertive protections for people who express thoughts of self-harm or suicide, for example,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey are capable of doing a better job detecting suicidal and self-harm language, blocking instructions and providing proper signposting to crisis lines. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe tech companies are capable of monitoring literally everything I look at on my laptop and targeting ads to me. They\u2019re more than capable of doing a much better job with people who are distressed interacting with their tools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In response to comments from Prof Kelly and Byrne, an OpenAI spokesman acknowledged that \u201cpeople sometimes turn to ChatGPT in sensitive moments\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOver the last few months, we\u2019ve worked with mental health experts around the world and updated our models to help ChatGPT more reliably recognise signs of distress, respond with care and guide people toward real-world support,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe\u2019ll continue to evolve ChatGPT\u2019s responses with input from experts to make it as helpful and safe as possible.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The spokesman added that OpenAI was conducting research into teaching the LLM how to recognise distress, de-escalate conversations and guide people towards professional care. <\/p>\n<ul class=\"c-unordered-list paywall\">\n<li class=\"c-list-item paywall\">Do you regularly use ChatGPT as an adviser, friend, therapist or a source of information?
