A French tourist interviewed outside the museum said there was \u201cno reason\u201d to charge non-Europeans more and that the fee should be the same for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Tourism experts say the Louvre\u2019s financial pressures help explain the decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Louvre is really cash-strapped right now and needs to do something,\u201d said Marion Joppe, a professor at the University of Guelph. \u201cIt can\u2019t really look to the government, which is already struggling with its own budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move also reflects a broader global pushback against mass tourism. Anti-tourism protests have spread across parts of Spain, New Zealand has increased its entry tax, and the United States recently raised national park fees for foreign visitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou take Paris \u2014 it gets about 50 million tourists a year,\u201d said Julian Karaguesian, an economist at McGill University. \u201cThat\u2019s roughly a million a week. The city simply wasn\u2019t built for those kinds of numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the higher price, many visitors say they will still line up to see the Mona Lisa and other of the museum\u2019s famous artworks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of the main attractions.
