{"id":291379,"date":"2026-01-18T21:15:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-18T21:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/291379\/"},"modified":"2026-01-18T21:15:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-18T21:15:10","slug":"the-staggering-7-6-trillion-price-tag-of-britains-net-zero-ambition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/291379\/","title":{"rendered":"The Staggering \u00a37.6 Trillion Price Tag of Britain&#8217;s Net Zero Ambition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Net zero is set to cost the UK economy billions of pounds more than public officials estimate, a new report has suggested, raising questions over the supposed savings to be made from the energy transition for households and businesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A new paper published by the Institute of Economic Affairs, a free market think tank, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/has-the-wind-shifted-on-net-zero\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raised questions <\/a>about cost estimates shared by the Climate Change Commission, an independent public body that provides advice on net zero policy to ministers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Energy analyst David Turner said the cash costs in the years to 2050 could hit a staggering \u00a37.6 trillion, presenting a challenge to the government and private sector companies looking to provide alternatives to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/explainer-why-are-energy-prices-so-high\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fossil fuels<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Roughnecks-Riches-Start-Up-American-Fracking\/dp\/B0FCDBHGSW\" class=\"charts_banner_clicked charts_banner_add_view\" data-banner_id=\"38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"not_lightbox\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/book.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The cost estimate is taken from analysis of National Energy System Operator (NESO) data as well as independent research around contract valuations, market pricing and sector-specific issues such as in transport.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This compares to a cumulative \u00a3108bn cost estimate made by the CCC, or around \u00a34bn a year. This figure accounts for wider savings in operating costs that offset capital investments in areas such as wind and solar farms as well as new heat pumps, though the total was a significant downgrade from a previous estimate of more than \u00a31 trillion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The CCC also said the private sector can \u201cprovide the majority of the required investment\u201d with the \u201cright incentives\u201d while the additional costs of not transitioning could be higher.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Net zero savings estimates are \u2018fantasy numbers\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Turner said the CCC and other public bodies including the Treasury and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/obr-warns-unfunded-spending-to-damage-uk-finances-amid-daunting-risks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR)<\/a>, which published damning figures on the \u00a3800bn taxpayer cost of net zero over 50 years, had not been \u201ctruthful\u201d about the true cost of the transition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we are to have a serious debate about net zero, the various public bodies need to be more transparent and, frankly, more honest,\u201d Turner said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have made fantasy assumptions about the cost of renewables and low-carbon technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the report, industrialist Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chairman and founder of INEOS, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDecarbonising Europe by deindustrialisation is idiotic. We lose jobs and security, and the CO2 simply floats back over Europe anyway.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cThe solution is to ban carbon tax, provide competitive energy for industry and incentivise growth and clean technology.
