The \u200ddeath toll from \u200da collision late on \u200cSunday in \u2060southern Spain<\/a> \u200cbetween \u200ba \u200dderailing high-speed train and \u2060a \u2060second oncoming train \u2060has risen \u200dto 39, Spanish broadcaster RTVE reported on \u200cMonday, \u200cciting police sources.<\/p>\n

The incident happened at 7.45pm local time (6.45pm Irish time) on Sunday \u200cnear Adamuz in the province of Cordoba, about 360km south \u2060of the capital Madrid. An Iryo train running between M\u00e1laga and Madrid went off the rails and slammed into a service from Madrid to Huelva, according to Spanish rail operator Adif.<\/p>\n

More than 200 trains between Madrid \u200cand \u200bthe \u200dsouthern Andalucia region – including major cities Cordoba, Seville and Granada – have been cancelled throughout Monday, according to RTVE.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez<\/a> has cleared \u2060out his agenda for the day, his office said in \u2060a statement on Monday.<\/p>\n

Video \u2060from the scene shared on social media on Sunday showed rescuers pulling passengers from twisted \u200dcarriages lying on their side under the glare of floodlights. Some passengers climbed out of smashed windows, while others were wheeled away on stretchers.<\/p>\n

There were about 400 passengers on the two trains, most of them Spaniards travelling back to and from Madrid \u200cafter the weekend. \u200cIt was unclear how many tourists could be onboard as January is not holiday season in \u200cSpain.<\/p>\n

The cause for the crash is not yet known, Spanish transport minister \u2060Oscar Puente told reporters at a press conference at Atocha station in Madrid on Sunday<\/p>\n

An Iryo train running between M\u00e1laga and Madrid went off the rails and slammed into a service from Madrid to Huelva, according to Spanish rail operator Adif.<\/p>\n

Iryo is an Italian-run private \u200drail operator. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n

The regional Civil Protection chief, Mar\u00eda Bel\u00e9n Moya Rojas, told Canal Sur that the incident happened in an area that is hard to reach.<\/p>\n

Local people were taking blankets and water to the scene to help the victims, she said.<\/p>\n

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said in a post on X that she was following \u201cthe terrible news\u201d from C\u00f3rdoba.<\/p>\n
