Earth Environ.<\/a>, 2026)<\/p>\n<p>For many years now, scientists have tracked a phenomenon called <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/gcb.70227\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ocean darkening<\/a> \u2013 a long-term, gradual drop in water clarity that limits the amount of light that can penetrate the water column associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/gcb.15837\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">declining kelp forests<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/gcb.14810\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">delayed phytoplankton blooms<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/ece3.70278\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stressed coral reefs<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.marpolbul.2016.10.053\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shrinking seagrass meadows<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s a slow, steady change that has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-ocean-is-getting-darker-threatening-all-that-lives-within\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">marching on for decades<\/a>. It doesn&#8217;t include the short, intense, episodic periods of darkness driven by storms, algal blooms, and sediment deposition, often following natural events such as wildfires, cyclones, and mudslides.<\/p>\n<p>These intense periods of darkening \u2013 the marine darkwaves \u2013 can be just as damaging as the slower long-term dimming, the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-025-03023-4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">say<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new work gives scientists a tool for identifying these shorter-term events by adapting the frameworks they use to detect other episodic ocean events, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-discover-intense-heatwaves-lurking-at-the-bottom-of-the-ocean\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">marine heatwaves<\/a> and cold spells. They used this to set the defining parameters for a marine darkwave, such as minimum duration, the degree of light loss relative to a seasonal baseline, and the depth at which the loss occurs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/marine-darkwave.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"330\" class=\"size-full wp-image-189262\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>An illustration of the drivers of marine darkwaves. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.waikato.ac.nz\/news-events\/news\/new-zealand-scientists-develop-world-first-framework-to-detect-extreme-underwater-darkness-events\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The University of Waikato<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The team then applied the framework to 16 years of underwater light measurements previously collected from the California coast and 10 years of data from New Zealand coastal sites in the Hauraki Gulf (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hauraki_Gulf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tikapa Moana<\/a>). These measurements were taken at depths of 7 and 20 meters. They also applied their framework to 21 years of satellite-sensing of seabed light in the waters off New Zealand&#8217;s East Cape.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2002 and 2023, between 25 and 80 marine darkwaves were detected off East Cape, typically lasting between 5 and 15 days on average. The longest event persisted for 64 days.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these events were associated with storm conditions, including <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyclone_Gabrielle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cyclone Gabrielle<\/a> in 2023. Coastal moorings in the Firth of Thames, a bay in the north of New Zealand, also recorded other storm-related darkwaves. Other causes included topsoil pollution from deforestation, wildfire runoff, and plankton blooms, and potentially dredging and coastal construction work.<\/p>\n<p>In extreme cases, at the peak of some darkwaves, the degree of dimming can make for literally some of the darkest days these patches of ocean see at any given time of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The paper did not quantify the effects this had on marine life directly, but it did point to other, previously published works showing that a drop in light levels can affect entire ecosystems, from <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fmars.2021.721087\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">kelp forests<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/lno.12318\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">macroalgal communities<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3354\/meps08120\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">jellyfish<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/castingcall?utm_source=SA_website&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=casting_call\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Mid-Article-Promos-Casting-Call-1-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Audition now for ScienceAlert's Casting Call\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-189354 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even short periods of reduced light can impair photosynthesis in kelp forests, seagrass, and corals,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waikato.ac.nz\/news-events\/news\/new-zealand-scientists-develop-world-first-framework-to-detect-extreme-underwater-darkness-events\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thoral says<\/a>. &#8220;These events can also influence the behaviour of fish, sharks, and marine mammals. When darkness persists, the ecological effects can be significant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Further work will be needed to identify different types of events \u2013 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/australia-bushfire-smoke-spawned-a-plankton-bloom-larger-than-the-entire-continent\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">phytoplankton bloom<\/a> and a sediment dump may affect light quality in different ways \u2013 and to quantify the level of habitat damage that can be attributed to these marine darkwave events.<\/p>\n<p>However, now that the basic framework is in place, future work has a solid basis to build from.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Coastal ecosystems are increasingly exposed to storm-driven sedimentation and higher climate variability,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waikato.ac.nz\/news-events\/news\/new-zealand-scientists-develop-world-first-framework-to-detect-extreme-underwater-darkness-events\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says coastal scientist Chris Battershill<\/a> of the University of Waikato.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Marine darkwaves help us understand when these systems are under acute stress.
