{"id":294076,"date":"2026-01-20T14:31:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T14:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/294076\/"},"modified":"2026-01-20T14:31:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T14:31:08","slug":"elon-musk-asks-followers-whether-he-should-buy-ryanair-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/294076\/","title":{"rendered":"Elon Musk asks followers whether he should buy Ryanair \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/elon-musk\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/elon-musk\/\">Elon Musk<\/a> has asked his followers on social media site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/x\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/x\/\">X<\/a> whether he should buy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ryanair\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ryanair\/\">Ryanair<\/a>, in the escalation of a dispute that began when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-oleary\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-oleary\/\">Michael O\u2019Leary<\/a> ruled out adding Starlink internet to the airline\u2019s planes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the past week, the Tesla boss has several times posted on X about purchasing the airline so he could fire its chief executive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Monday night, Mr Musk posted a poll titled \u201cBuy Ryan Air and restore Ryan as their rightful ruler\u201d, which was viewed 30 million times. Ryanair founder Tony Ryan died in 2007.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ryanair shares have moved little since the spat erupted last week and posted modest gains on Tuesday before falling back, suggesting investors do not expect the world\u2019s richest person to take action. The airline has a market capitalisation of about $35 billion (\u20ac29.8 billion) and will be debt-free in the coming months.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Buy Ryan Air and restore Ryan as their rightful ruler<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/2013315607253655621?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">January 19, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under European Union (EU) rules, airlines based in the bloc must be majority-owned by nationals from within the area or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ryanair previously prevented non-EU nationals, including from the UK, from buying its shares following Brexit. Photograph: Elias Rom\/Getty Images <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">When Mr Musk bought Twitter, which he renamed X, in 2022, he was forced to raise much of the $44 billion against his own Tesla shares. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The bizarre feud began when Mr O\u2019Leary told Ireland\u2019s Newstalk radio that Mr Musk knows \u201czero\u201d about planes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr O\u2019Leary said that buying internet from Musk\u2019s Starlink would cost the airline $250 million a year by increasing the drag on its planes and burning more fuel, while its passengers would not want to pay for the service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He added: \u201cWhat Elon Musk knows about flights and drag would be zero &#8230; I frankly wouldn\u2019t pay any attention to anything Elon Musk puts on that cesspit of his called X.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Musk responded by calling O\u2019Leary an \u201cutter idiot\u201d and saying he should be fired. One user suggested Mr Musk should buy the airline instead, to which Mr Musk responded by saying it was a good idea. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Both sides have issued provocative statements since.
