\n\tKim Petras<\/a> wants out of her record deal with Republic Records, with the pop star unleashing a series of posts on X explaining why she\u2019d rather be an independent artist going forward.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Tuesday (Jan. 20), Petras wrote<\/a> bluntly, \u201cI\u2019m tired of having no control over my own life or career.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI want to continue to self fund and self curate my own music,\u201d she continued. \u201cThis is why I have formally requested to be dropped @RepublicRecords.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn another post<\/a>, the German-born musician alleged that her label has \u201crefused\u201d to set a release date for her next album, Detour \u2014 which Petras wrote<\/a> has \u201cbeen done for 6 months\u201d \u2014 and has also not yet paid her collaborators for their work on the record. She also added, \u201cI won a grammy 2 years ago\u2026\u2026.. the music is TEA. Still no support. If it\u2019s not a tiktok trend or 80s revival queerbaiting shit these labels<\/a> have no interest in supporting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBillboard has reached out to Republic Records for comment.<\/p>\n

\n\tPetras signed to the Monte and Avery Lipman-founded label in summer 2021. Less than two years later, she and Sam Smith would win best pop duo\/group performance for their Billboard Hot 100<\/a> chart-topping collaboration \u201cUnholy,\u201d at the 2023 Grammys, making Petras the first openly trans artist to win a Recording Academy honor.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat same year, Petras would present Republic with the label of the year <\/a>award at Billboard\u2018s Power 100 party. Her recent posts on X mark a total 180 from her remarks at the 2023 event, during which she said, \u201cI strongly, strongly, deeply agree with this assessment: Republic Records, best label ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI thought I was gonna perform on tables in gay clubs for life, but these guys saw something in me and I\u2019m grateful they did,\u201d she continued at the time. \u201cMy life has changed so much. Thank you so much for supporting artists and believing in artists and pushing artists to make the best art they can possibly make. I didn\u2019t think a label like you guys would exist.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPetras dropped just three singles in 2025: \u201cPolo,\u201d \u201cFreak It\u201d and \u201cI Like Ur Look.\u201d She\u2019s been teasing that her third studio album is in the works for the past year, and on the last day of 2025, she shared a photo of a cake on Instagram<\/a> celebrating Detour\u2018s \u201c0th birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut no matter what happens with Republic \u2014 which ended 2025 atop<\/a> Billboard\u2018s leading three year-end labels charts \u2014 Petras says she\u2019s going to make sure her fans get new music as soon as possible. After her string of posts about her issues with her team, the musician closed out with, \u201cI\u2019m dropping Detour regardless.\u201d<\/p>\n
