On Jan. 21, 2026, <strong>he revealed that narrow-stance squats were critical to his prime leg development.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Legs are key to a complete physique. However, building balanced, conditioned, and full <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/25-minute-bodyweight-leg-workout\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">legs<\/a> can be quite the challenge. <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/15599\/jay-cutler\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jay Cutler<\/a> realized this at a young age, and coupled with his genetics, he presented arguably the best lower body the Men\u2019s Open division has seen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, Cutler cemented his legacy by winning back the <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/history-mr-olympia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mr. Olympia<\/a> title. At the event, he shocked the audience with his iconic quad stomp pose. He <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/jay-cutler-bodybuilding-career\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">held his own with the best for more than 12 years<\/a> and even today, can appreciate the methods that guided him to success.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jay Cutler Explains How Narrow-Stance Squats Built His Iconic Quad Sweeps\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the YouTube video, Cutler credited narrow-stance squats for helping him grow impressive quad sweeps.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-center\">\n<p>\u201cOut of all the top bodybuilders, people come to me for advice on legs. I\u2019m not going to lie; a lot of my leg development was through genetics. I had a great sweep on my thighs. I was always a narrow-stance squatter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A narrow stance allowed him target the front thighs more effectively. I want to hit more of the frontal thighs, build that sweep. I think when you go a little wider, like a sumo stance, you\u2019re going to work more of the glutes and hamstrings, the hips, which you can use for some of the back training.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He tries to isolate the quads as much as possible and sticks with 10\u201312 repetitions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote align-center\">\n<p>\u201cIdeally, for me, when training legs, I want to keep everything out of it except the quads. I know that\u2019s impossible, but you have to focus on the frontal thighs.<\/p>\n<p>So you\u2019re going to notice when I squat, watch my stance as I do these, the feet stay closer together, toes forward, and of course, I\u2019m always trying to hit the frontal thighs,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/k6OpgZlAGOU?si=sI7yW4nwql4A8Fxc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">shared<\/a>. \u201c10 or 12 reps.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite a quad strain, Cutler pushed through the pain to continue his recent <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/jay-cutler-olympia-level-leg-workout-longevity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">leg training session<\/a>. At 52 years old, he implements pyramid sets to add intensity to workouts. He admits that his \u2018whole training aspect\u2019 is focused on longevity now rather than hypertrophy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cutler built some of the biggest and most conditioned legs during the prime years of his career.
