{"id":29707,"date":"2025-08-29T00:20:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T00:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/29707\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T00:20:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T00:20:11","slug":"christian-brother-paedophile-paul-dunleavy-dies-in-jail-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/29707\/","title":{"rendered":"Christian Brother paedophile Paul Dunleavy dies in jail \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/paul-dunleavy-former-christian-brother-jailed-for-further-10-years-ove-historic-sex-abuse-OH6KYGF2KZDJDH6TP5FSHX2ZZI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/paul-dunleavy-former-christian-brother-jailed-for-further-10-years-ove-historic-sex-abuse-OH6KYGF2KZDJDH6TP5FSHX2ZZI\/\">Prolific paedophile Paul Dunleavy<\/a>, who was convicted of a string of sexual offences against children, has died. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Christian Brother was sentenced to ten years behind bars last November after being convicted of 36 charges of historical sexual abuse against nine boys. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The 89-year-old died in hospital on Tuesday, the Prison Service has confirmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The offences took place between 1964 and 1991 while Dunleavy worked at four schools in Belfast, Newry and Armagh, with the victims aged between seven and 14. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/watch-man-44-detained-on-suspicion-of-firearms-offences-following-arrest-in-co-down-village-HL2KGUWQLJC2LF7DUZCMI7TT3Y\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Watch: Man (44) detained on suspicion of firearms offences following arrest in Co Down village\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/YY32JWWD75G3RP3CNSFYXRBRXU.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/former-senator-mairia-cahill-endures-49-hour-wait-in-belfast-hospital-emergency-department-E7WPPFGJOJAIPHGGQ76U2UL6LQ\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Former senator M&#xE1;ir&#xED;a Cahill endures 49-hour wait in Belfast hospital emergency department\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/UG36HFAZPNL23PM2QCJHRM2JKA.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Dunleavy had already been behind bars after he was previously convicted on two separate occasions of sexual offences against children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Over three trials the predator, who retired in 1997, was convicted of 72 offences involving 18 victims in total.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Offences included indecent assault, attempted buggery and gross indecency with or towards a child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Concerns were raised last year after The Congregation of Christian Brothers confirmed that despite the convictions Dunleavy remained a member of the order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It is understood the convicted sex offender died in hospital after being taken from Maghaberry prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A spokesman for the Prison Service said: \u201cThe Northern Ireland Prison Service can confirm the death of an 89-year-old male prisoner from Maghaberry at an outside hospital. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAs with standard procedure, the PSNI, Coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman have been informed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Solicitor Owen Beattie, of Owen Beattie Solicitors, who represents several victims, said \u201cthe shadow of Paul Dunleavy covers a history of systemic abuse perpetrated on an industrial scale across the country\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe questionable conduct of the Christian Brothers throughout this period is still under intensive investigation which will be factored into ongoing litigation before the High Court,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Prolific paedophile Paul Dunleavy, who was convicted of a string of sexual offences against children, has died.
