It\u2019s amazing, it\u2019s energising,\u201d says Irishman Diarmuid Early of his recent Excel world championship win in the Hyper X Arena in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/las-vegas\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/las-vegas\/\">Las Vegas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The sport involves a lot of crunching, not of bones or abs, but of numbers on an Excel spreadsheet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is described by the BBC as the fastest growing e-sport, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway\/\">Galway<\/a> man took home the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\">Microsoft<\/a> Excel World Championship belt and $5,000 prize in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More than 150,000 people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=URxoXglEbtk\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=URxoXglEbtk\">watched<\/a>, many online, but it was the in-person audience that added to the intensity. \u201cIt\u2019s a very full-on experience,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Challenges include maze navigation through coloured cells and columns, desert-island survival optimisation and this year\u2019s final, origami, where cells were used to fold a sheet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The contest involves hundreds of competitors taking part in regional qualifications across five continents, leading to play-offs and a final of the 24 remaining players. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere\u2019s a group of people who are very invested in this and completely lose their minds every time the scoreboard moves up,\u201d Early says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Audience members can also see competitors\u2019 workings-out on a big screen as they try to problem-solve the case. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Diarmuid Early competes in the Microsoft Excel World Championship\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FDURZT4SLVGD5DAA3OW2AVQM5Q.JPG\"   width=\"800\" height=\"439\"\/>Diarmuid Early competes in the Microsoft Excel World Championship <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Early, who runs his own data science consultancy firm in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/new-york\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/new-york\">New York<\/a>, does this for the enjoyment rather than the prize money. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> \u201cIf I spent the time I spend on this on client work instead, I would make much more money. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is for fun. Many of my best friends come from this group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The social element of the competitive Excel scene came as a surprise to the UCC graduate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMy expectation the first time I met this group of people was basically that it would be an extremely nerdy, extremely odd group. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI was pleasantly surprised to find that they were actually very normal, well-adjusted, balanced people who also have lots of other interests and hobbies, and were warm and engaging. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cYou read about the communities around online gaming or other e-sports and they are these weird, toxic, aggressive, anti-woman places. Ours could not be more different\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Among his friends in the US and the competitive Excel community, Diarmuid is known as \u201cDim\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOne of my college roommates in UCC was English and he took to calling me Dim, partly because he couldn\u2019t say Diarmuid and I think partly just because it was funny. It stuck ever since. Even my wife calls me Dim.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Since graduating with a maths and physics degree in 2008 as the Celtic Tiger economy collapsed, Early has spent his adult working life outside of Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cPretty much my whole generation, at least among my friend group, left Ireland after the crash. A lot of people went to London to get work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He had wanted to move to London to be closer to his Scottish girlfriend, who is now his wife. We were looking around the Greenwich Village area for an apartment and we\u2019d go and sit in Washington Square Park in between viewings. You would pass three different people playing live music. It\u2019s very lively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fourteen years and two Trump presidencies later the atmosphere in the Big Apple has changed somewhat. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI mean, I have not seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/19\/irish-man-risks-us-retaliation-for-unmasking-thousands-of-ice-officers-online\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/19\/irish-man-risks-us-retaliation-for-unmasking-thousands-of-ice-officers-online\/\">Ice<\/a> on the street, but I\u2019m certainly very aware of their looming presence,\u201d Early says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe school that my children go to has a number of asylum-seeker families who are afraid to leave the house because they could be randomly arrested. It is not a good time. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt definitely is a strange situation to grow up in. It is not a welcoming time for immigrants in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Diarmuid Early is from Co Galway and studied at UCC.
